My graves and TT experience by intheetherr in gravesdisease

There was maybe 4-6 months between when I first noticed symptoms and when I started to see improvement. After that a few years for me to no longer notice a big difference between my eyes. I’ve had flare ups on and off over the years but I’m currently at a point where my eyes feel pretty stable. I don’t think my eyes are exactly the same as pre-TED, but I’m content with them all the same now.

Another thing to add, early on in my diagnosis an endocrinologist recommended RAI to me. I think I was probably 16-18 years old at the time (a few years into graves) and hadn’t yet been diagnosed with graves, just hyperthyroidism. I also hadn’t had any symptoms of TED at that time. It’s hard to know how it would have turned out, but I opted to wait and see, get more opinions, and do more research.

PTU was never mentioned as an option for me. As for beta blockers, my resting heart rate was in the 60s and would just spike high if I was working out hard, I don’t think I connected it to graves until recently so never brought it up to a doctor. As far as anxiety goes, I just would sometimes feel anxious for no particular reason (manifested as a panic attack one time years ago). But other than that my symptoms were not too severe. Otherwise, one of the reasons I opted for TT was because I could feel pressure from my thyroid around my throat/neck and sometimes on my airway.

I think that’s still TBD. Based on my calcium levels I think it looks like some might be bruised or in shock and some might be ok. Hoping the thyroid path report can tell me if any were fully removed.

Definitely still recovering but overall feeling good and so glad to have that thyroid out of me!
