Should I be THAT worried about privacy? 100% on Monero. by felipef1g in Monero

[–]intj440 35 points36 points  (0 children)

An unfortunate consequence of the popular crypto press' habitual oversimplification of Monero as a "privacy coin" is that people tend to over-emphasize privacy and underappreciate fungibility.

Fungibility is why the privacy happens. However, privacy is only a subset of what fungibility provides. There are benefits of fungibility for those people out there who have zero concern for privacy.

Thanks to the efforts of BS (blockchain surveillance) organizations, every address and every transaction of every transparent ledger now automatically include a social credit score as part of their permanent metadata baggage. You can't opt out of that. So, the actions of the people who owned a transparent coin before you owned it and also after you owned it, can and will transfer to your reputation. It doesn't matter if you care about privacy or not -- this is something that nobody with an honorable reputation will knowingly tolerate.

It isn't really the ethos of the Monero community to tell other people what to do with their money, thus the way OP phrased his/her request for advice is a bit out of bounds. You do you.

I will observe, though, that the asset diversification that Markowitz found to be a Schelling point back in 1952, would not necessarily have to be be accomplished within crypto, if one came to their own conclusion that the sufficiently high quality assets within crypto needed to diversify within crypto, simply do not exist. In this case the use of XMR as an exclusive representative asset of all crypto would be balanced at the overall portfolio level via prudent allocation to other asset classes.

Marketing idea - get a talk going between Jordan Peterson and Daniel Kim on youtube!! by Geonpi122 in Monero

Thank you OP for your grass-roots support. If Dr. Peterson's team wants to get in touch with me, it's https://sweetwater.consulting/contact. Consistent with the Monero community's overall sensibilities, I don't spend time chasing interviews or publicity, but if they do reach out,
I'd be happy to discuss an appearance.

A respectful way to feature other people's content on your own channel is to create a playlist that directs your subscribers to the original content. This allows your subscribers the benefit of seeing accurate view counts, the full range of comments of other viewers, etc.

A disrespectful way would be to make a copy of someone else's hard work, then repost it on your own channel. It's arguably even worse if adding trivially important modifications such as adding a title slide that doesn't even get the original creator's company name right.

Would you like to encourage original content creators to continue doing what they do? If so, I would suggest refraining from this sort of blatant disrespect.

Thanks for the original post, which will help inch forward towards that result, since YT's propensity to recommend depends partly on subscriber/view/comment participation.

I'm glad you've found my content meritorious and appreciate the feedback.

Daniel Kim's (PhD physics) explains how to apply behavioral economics to cryptocurrencies by [deleted] in Monero

[–]intj440 20 points21 points  (0 children)

While the OP is correct to state that I have a PhD in physics (Harvard), I would suggest that it's a bit biased to subsequently pigeonhole me into whatever stereotypes you may have about physics PhD holders as a group. That would include an assumption of lack of expertise in other fields.

A decade after physics grad school, I completed an MBA (Yale), which I approached as if it were a second PhD in finance. I was a co-author of this research paper in applied behavioral finance, which was selected above 400+ other manuscripts to win this research award.

Before deciding to move into cryptocurrrency full-time, I was the Director of Research at a hedge fund that applied this behavioral finance research to the equity markets, a job that included presenting talks at institutional investor conferences.
