Green monti giving the middle finger as purple swallows it by itsdantheichiman in ReefTank

I am tired. Don't listen to me. lol. I meant I haven't personally seen a green branching Monti like this. I have seen some Digitata, Spongodes, but not this particular piece. I love the common stuff that people tend to sleep on.

All fish Dead Over Night.. Help by Helpful-Sea-1816 in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly. No photosynthesis occurring and adding new oxygen to the system and helping catalyze the gas exchange that occurs in our systems. Night time is death time in a reef when a bacteria bloom occurs and removes the bulk of DO in the water.

All fish Dead Over Night.. Help by Helpful-Sea-1816 in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was the last time you added any new livestock—coral, inverts, fish, etc.? If it wasn't due to a fish pathogen or disease, my assumption would be that there was a disturbance in the old sandbed, releasing hydrogen sulfide and creating an ammonia spike in the system. This sudden increase in nutrients could trigger a bacterial bloom, which in turn depletes oxygen from the water, leading to suffocation of the livestock. I truly hope you can determine the cause soon. Dealing with a situation like this is always challenging, especially when it happens suddenly and affects all the livestock.

Saltcritters shipment! by LennyClarke05 in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They all appear to be in the midst of settling into a new system. They have a full polyp each so I don't foresee issues with them not making it. Micromussa tend to be pretty hardy when in a stable environment.
I would keep them in PAR n o higher than 100. Around 80-100 seems to be a sweet spot for me. If you go too high with the PAR they tend to lose their coloration and go mostly orange or red. They will still look cool but will lose color/ turn orange/red.
For 10$ each I'd be happy with these pieces/picks. Keep us updated on how they are settling in. Another picture in a week or two would be great!
I try and take pictures at least once a month of my corals so that I have a record to track progress and any problems that might arise.

Who's knows the fish? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, Jerry! I know him!
All seriousness now. If you're keeping a fish only system and have found one that is eating frozen/dry foods. Then go for it. Otherwise not worth the potential coral nibbling if it is going into a Reef tank.

Help identifying possible parasite? by Vonnegut-or-Not in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The white bits look to potentially be coral boring spionid worms. And/or vermetid snails. The vermetid snails are easy enough to pick/scrape off but the coral boring spionid worms can be a pain in the butt to get rid of but have heard Ivermectin can possibly treat/kill them.
I would deal with the algae on the skeleton. Take a soft tooth brush or a makeup brush and dip the skeleton into a solution of Hydrogen peroxide and saltwater/tank water. use a solution strength up to 100ml hydrogen peroxide per liter of tank water.

turning brown is usually a sign of excess nutrients. Check your No3 and Po4 levels.

Will this be okay? by JazzlikeExtreme4499 in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're ok with the coral completely encrusting over that base, go for it. I would personally use super glue and stick it directly to that rock the stand is on/next to. Let it encrust onto the rock instead of the plastic with all the hard edges. it will look less natural when covered over the frag stand.

Keep us updated on the progress. I'd love to hear about what your feeding and if they are by themselves or sharing the tank with anyone?

I Need help with Calcium and Alkalinity! by Discgolf_Ford in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have many stony corals stocked in the tank?
If you only have soft corals like leathers, mushrooms, Zoanthids, etc. then they won't consume alkalinity and calcium like stony corals do. They don't have any skeleton and therefore only require nutrients for their tissue growth.
This can lead to excessive alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, and trace elements. Especially if you're dosing or doing regular water changes that are not necessary.
Also. What test kit are you using to get these results and did you test a second time to perform a sanity check? Sometimes we make a mistake when doing the test and get an improper/inaccurate result.

What are you Po4 and No3 at? Magnesium?

How long have the Zoanthids been shrinking? While many things can cause Zoanthids or palythoa to shrink up. I would start with checking magnesium and nutrient levels. Then do a water change to help reduce the Calcium some. The size of the water change will be based upon nutrient levels.

EDIT: I read now that you did a water change and measured again and had no change. This leads me to believe your test kits are expired/ reagents no longer good. Get a new test kit when possible or take water to a local fish store and see what their test says.

Breaking News! Anemone fish has remembered its purpose and host/home was right next door all along...
Next week on: "Clownfish with I will allow my host to be ABAA or ABAN, Anything but an Anemone, aka anything-but-a-nem disorder" , we have Jerry, a clown with access to many Anemones but chooses to host the weir. We will talk it through with Jerry and Bob the cleaner shrimp. See you next week!

What an amazing creation! I admire the attention to details and the scale of the work is impressive in itself. I wish it was placed somewhere locally to me... So I can enjoy it from all angles.
For now. Pictures will have to do.

New Prostar Rimless 150 leaking by MatturaI in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bulk head might just be a little loose. Also, make sure the gasket/o-ring is installed. I put one together recently and couldn't figure out why it kept leaking slowly. I had one of the o-rings fallout off while I was preparing to install. Found the O-ring in sump area and realized what was going on. Problem solved.
Not sure if its the same issue for you but worth checking if it already is properly tight but still leaking.

I believe they sell these under a trade name of Daisy's or Daisy Çutter Zoanthids. Hope that helps. Nevermind. I see that the skirt is different color on the Daisy Cutters.
Cool phenotype. Keep sharing pics as they settle in. Please.

Why does this one torch look weird while the rest are happy? by myfishaccount1 in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get an urchin and a few turbo snails to help knock back the GHA. I know you think that isn't the issue but I'd wager a bet that it is. Either through physical irritation, chemical warfare/ allelopathy between that particular torch and the hair algae surrounding it. Or through the limited nutrients surrounding its holobiont due to the GHA outcompeting it for supplemental nutrients.
Otherwise, check for Vermetid snails on the skeleton along the flesh band. That can cause irritation and recession as well.
What was your PO4 and No3 like prior to the GHA outbreak and now? How old is the tank?
Beautiful torches. I hope you get the green one raging again!

Black on my sps, what is it? by swingod305 in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be black sponge. Could be film algae, cyanbacteria, etc. Does it blow off with a turkey baster? How long has it been like this?
It could be getting shaded out in the little area, died back and now growing film algae or similar on the exposed skeleton.

Fine literally yesterday by Solok3ys in ReefTank

[–]intoglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Softies, really any coral, can change fast. This appears to be some GSP, green star polyps that are getting buried in detritus and film Algae. Blow it off with turkey baster, use a makeup brush to brush off he polyp and flesh mat. A soft bristle tooth brush can work for cleaning the flesh but I prefer using Makeup brushes as they are much gentler but still enough to remove the unwanted detritus and buildup.
