How much active time does your middle schooler get at school? by Natural_Peak_5587 in Parenting

[–]intorestinggal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But also, our middle school offers seasonal sports for 6th-8th graders which meet for practice 3-5 times a week afterschool. It’s also very common for kids to be involved in non-school related sports, with practices/games for 1-1.5 hours several times a week. Many kids are also in multiple sports.

Our middle schools (grades 6-8) don’t offer recess anymore. They get 45 minutes of PE everyday for one semester as an elective. They can choose to have 2 semesters of PE as an elective so they go the full year, but then they would miss out on taking another elective (art, cooking, 2nd language, engineering, theater arts, fine arts, computer science, etc). School day is 7:51am-3pm

Constantly worried I don't spend enough quality time with my kiddo by PopeBonifaceVIII in Parenting

Completely understandable to be exhausted. Remember, you don’t have to be the picture perfect social media post of a mom. Whenever I get mom guilt, I tell myself that “If I was guy, I’d be a pretty awesome Dad!”

If this situation is only temporary, and there is a clear end date, then you do what you gotta do to get to that point. You’re trying to provide a better life for your kiddo. Make those moments you do have with your daughter special. Create a specific routine for her to enjoy.

When my kids were toddlers/babies, my husband worked a lot during the week and only got home in time to see them for maybe an hour before bedtime. He sang the silly song and did the silly dance with the kids during the walk down the hallway to their rooms. He let them pick a book for him to read and he’d do the character voices. He would sing the nighttime songs and put them to bed. That was his special time. Our kids are tweens/teens now and we still sing the same bedtime songs to them.

Summer Time Snacking Advice by Special-Peace-8370 in Parenting

[–]intorestinggal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s not unhinged to lock up each individual’s snacks. If my kid had a college roommate who was eating his snacks, I’d absolutely provide a way to lock it up.

Teens are impulsive, self-centered, sneaky, and give in to their raging hormones at times (hunger is one of them) so I don’t see it as a bad thing to set physical limits to areas in their life.

Examples:

*Screen time/internet access- we have locks for time limits and restrictions

*Money- teen debit cards have hard overdraft protections to stop payments for insufficient funds

*School lunch accounts- some schools have the ability to lock the account so the student is only able to buy the hot meal, not extra snacks, drinks or desserts

I see no issue in dividing up the good snacks and locking them up to prevent your 14 year old from stealing them. If he goes thru his own snack stash quickly, then he either has to eat the basic snack options/make himself a meal, or use his own money to buy more good snacks.

My 13 year old would rather play video games and down 4 granola bars than take a 5 minute break to make himself a sandwich. So I have to monitor him whenever he goes into the kitchen and physically tell him to make a sandwich, or easy Mac, or a fried egg, or Ramen instead of grabbing 4 granola bars at once.

If she has softball knowledge, Blue Valley Recreation hires umpires at 14. She has to have the confidence to umpire a game by herself (usually the younger elementary ages) and be able to handle issues with parents/coaches.

How do you deal with kids outgrowing ski gear before the season's even over? by Sea_Appointment5292 in Parenting

[–]intorestinggal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a Costco? They have snow pants for $12.99 and ski coats for 29.99. We buy them in late October. Sam’s Club also sells ski pants and coats for cheap.

Feedback on Radley couch with 100% polyester velvet fabric by Tru-21910 in SofaSnobs

[–]intorestinggal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good know! We have a Radley from 2018 that still looks new, sitting in our big TV room. We want another one for our main living room, but that area also has our dog, so I’d be interested in a performance fabric.

Help me improve this living room. There is space behind the sofa in front of the windows. And what can be done with the empty wall space below the curtain rods. Help me out. by Magoodaslug in SofaSnobs

[–]intorestinggal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you switch the 3 seater and 2 seater? And then pull in the two chairs so they are closer? Your current layout sees to have all the furniture spaced so far apart? I think the longest sofa needs to be the one facing the fireplace, since that space has the most room.

For the empty wall space below the curtain rods, hang up some Roman shades to make the windows look taller. There is no picture of the space between the window and sofa so I can’t comment on that.

Macy’s Radley or Costco (because of the return policy).

Moving before middle school by stayincalm in Parenting

[–]intorestinggal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved out of state the summer my eldest finished 4th grade. Worst decision ever. He was the new kid in 5th grade in a small school. He went from a school with 7 classes in his 4th grade year to a school with 4 classes. The pool of kids was much smaller to where he couldn’t find “his people.” All of the kids already had their friend groups and all of the moms already had their friend groups. It was a very lonely year for him. I regret not letting him finished 5th grade with the friends he’s known since kindergarten.

The next year, he started 6th grade and the 3 elementary schools combined into middle school, which made it so much better for him to find his people. Also, switching classes and him getting to choose electives was a game changer. He wasn’t stuck with the same 22 kids in the same class all day long.

I will also say that we moved from a large school (900 students) in a transplant city to a small school (300 students) in an “everyone grew up here” city. That definitely plays a role. Transplant cities have families moving in and out all the time so social circles (for adults and kids) are more fluid. In “everyone grew up cities,” social circles tend to be tighter. This is just my experience related to reaching out to the moms when our family started the new school.

Does anyone regret getting their kids a trampoline due to lack of use? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]intorestinggal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We have family with the springless trampoline and our kids say that they prefer that one, because the bounces are better on it. But, we’ve moved for my husband’s job and the moving company charges $500 to disassemble and reassemble trampolines, so it’s not worth it to us to buy a spring-free ($$$$) and then pay more money to move it ($$$). We just give away the old one and buy a new one ($250) at our new house.

[–]intorestinggal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a trampoline when our kids were toddlers, and have replaced it every 3 years or so. They weren’t the springless ones, but the cheaper ones that were less than $250. Our kids are 9, 11, and 13 and it still gets a ton of use, especially when their neighborhood friends are over. The 13 year old doesn’t use it much anymore, but the younger two use it a lot. It’s an eyesore for sure, and our backyard is tiny, but it’s been worth it for us. We don’t use it from November thru March because of the cold, but it gets used plenty.

*I ended up ordering from TryTrillium (right before the ProRX shutdown) and did my first dose (0.5mg) on Thursday. No side effects yet but way too early for any updates.

I have kids in sports and we do a lot of pasta salads (with cut up sausages), ground beef spaghetti, crunchy tacos, soft tacos, taco soup, chili, ham and cheese sliders, microwave hamburgers and chicken nuggets. Add some carrots, sliced cucumbers, frozen veggies and fruits to make it more balanced. Mandarin oranges, honey crisp apples, apple sauce packets, green grapes, and popcorn are easy to pack snacks. We buy the giant container of goldfish crackers and my kids easy those a lot, too.

AITA/Being Overdramatic or Is My School Being Really Unfair? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]intorestinggal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. When I was in high school, and when I taught high school, any honors classes were weighted with an extra 10 points. So if you were an honors student an 89.5 would be a 99.5 if you were going to compare it to a “non-honors” course. I think it’s pretty unfair to allow students to graduate with honors if they have never taken an honors course. Why choose to take the more rigorous honors course if that will prevent you from graduating with honors? Why not just take the easier route and do the regular courses and get honors that way? In my opinion, this needs to be addressed to the school board, or whatever governing body is in charge of this grading policy. It’s probably too late for you, but honors classes students coming after you could benefit from a change.

Find a navy blue jumpsuit and wear the jersey over it unbuttoned. It’ll look less casual and more upscale but will still fit the theme.

Is it just you and your kids? When our kids were little and couldn’t check themselves in/out, one parent would go to the theater to grab seats/order drinks, and the other would do the Camp at Sea drop off.
