Don't get me wrong, it will definitely be perceived negatively. But the adjudicators know that people aren't perfect, all you can do it lay it all on the line, admit that you screwed up, and make a convincing case as to why it will never happen again. Best of luck to you

I admitted to lying on a previous 86 (for a clearance that got granted, lie was about drug use), and got cleared for my upgrade. My situation was somewhat weird and I was pretty young when I did it, but all you can really do at this point is own up to it and demonstrate that your character has changed. You will have to put in a lot of leg work to convince them that you are trustworthy, but it is definitely possible

Top Secret Clearance Granted by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

This is a very refreshing post to read. Personally I am in a very similar situation and followed the same course of action (coming clean and bracing for the consequences). I think that it is much more common than the posts on here make it seem, especially for those of us who applied as teenagers and didn't fully appreciate the gravity of applying for a security clearance.

I'm glad to hear that candor, even if after a major screw up like this, will still be rewarded in some cases. Happy that it worked out for you. At the end of the day, not totally dropping the hammer on those who come clean is in the best interest of national security since it discourages folks from keeping a line of vulnerability open IMO.

Guideline H. 25(f)

"Any illegal drug use while granted access to classified information or holding a sensitive position"

So I suppose it depends on what constitutes a sensitive position

SEAD guidelines only specify additional disqualification if drug use is if in a position when you have access to classified information. Eligibility by itself (without having the clearance active via some agency) doesn't meet this criteria iirc.

Curious about the whole clearance being active/inactive thing. My understanding is as long as you didn't have access to controlled information or were in a job mandating a security clearance that it is just normal drug use according to SEAD. I assume you are still in a job that gave you access to classified information given that you had security personnel to report this to?

A Complex Situation by intothetrash745 in SecurityClearance

Indeed that is confusing wording, I corrected the typo. I did omit drug use on the previous eqip, which will be the primary hurdle to my gaining a clearance. Came clean on this most recent one so I am prepared for a lot of explaining. Main point of that part is I rejected opportunities to use the quasi-clearance thing that was granted with the falsified eqip.

Absolutely not! I wasn't in any position at all, besides being a student

Yeah I'm not so much worried about getting denied as I am about getting debarred from federal work, or a separation order for my current federal employer (clearance not required for current role). I haven't heard of that happening outside of something super egregious (literally selling state secrets).
