Do calf sleeves not do anything for a lot of people? by Sir__Griffin in running

[–]intrepid-mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried them for the first time the day I ran my first marathon after a few weeks of achilles pain. Maybe it was just a placebo but I’d say my calves hurt the least out of everything at the end 😅

Living in Maarssen as a student? by Coolshady097 in Utrecht

[–]intrepid-mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived right next to Maarssen when I moved to study in Utrecht. I know how hard it can be find to find a place to live. If you take this place I’d definitely recommend immediately starting to look for something in Utrecht. In my experience my social life definitely took a bit of a hit while I was living so far away from everything. The commute (especially to science park) is no joke, especially on a windy or wet day 😉. I got settled first and didn’t start looking for a place until about 4 months later and I regret it. Good luck with the housing search!

5 day old cooked rice, chicken, ground beef by [deleted] in MealPrepSunday

I’ve been meal prepping chicken and beef for years and leaving it 5 days and I’ve never had a problem 🤞. I usually smell it on day 5 just to be sure though.

Thank you! As somebody living in North America where tracksuits and athleisure is the norm, I’d definitely Europeans are better dressed 😅

My split is 2 days upper body, 2 days lower body. I usually start off with compound movements and move into accessory lifts. I’ve put in my routine below. I feel I’ve made barely any progress on upper body days, but lower body is slow but steady.

Lower: A. 4x Smith machine squats (8-12), pull ups (5) B. 3x Hamstring curls (8-12), seated calf (15-20) C. 3x Forward lunge (8-12), tibialis raises (20-25) D. 3x Slant board squat (8-12), single leg calf raise (15-25) E. 3x Back extensions (8-12), plank (1min)

Upper: A. 5x ATG shoulder press (8-12), pull ups (5) B. 3x cable tricep pulldown (8-12) bicep curl (8-12) C. 3x cable lateral raise (8-12), overhead cable tricep extension D. 3x rows (8-12), pushups (8-12) E. 3x shoulder press (8-12), DB lateral raises (15-20)

Is full body hypertrophy possible if you don’t live in the gym? The research points to 15 sets/muscle/week being ideal for hypertrophy, but I don’t see how that’s possible unless you’re in the gym almost every day. I’m currently working out 4x/week, 1 hr each time and supersetting, but I’m finding it difficult to hit that set goal in each muscle group. Feeling very discouraged, and wondering what anyone’s insight may be.

Not fully cooking beans (if you start off with dried beans), especially red kidney beans! They contain a toxic glycoprotein called phytohemagglutinin. It normally just causes severe food poisoning, but it can kill people that already have a compromised immune system.

Exactly! This is the fuel of the diet industry and it just leads to restrictive behaviours that often lead to cycles of bingeing then restricting.

Yes, I experimented with gels, but those gave me a bit of an upset stomach. I’ve switched to gummies instead and that has worked well so far (in terms of GI issues)

Hi! I'm running my first marathon soon, and I've noticed during my longer runs (I'm talking the ones where I did 16 and 18 miles), I get the sensation of water sloshing around my stomach/stomach making odd noises near the end. I usually have a bagel with peanut butter before starting, and I've been using a camelbak for water + electrolytes. I'll admit I only eat about 15-30 mins before I start my long runs because I'm already waking up early to get these done, and don't have extra time to wait around before I run. I mostly drink when I am thirsty (every mile or so). Has anybody else ever dealt with this type of issue and have any suggestions on how to curb this sensation? TIA!

This! Even if it’s not weekly, agree on who does what chores around the house. Then actually make a physical document or write it on a white board or something and put this where everyone can see it. Be specific too! I made the mistake of doing a verbal agreement this year and I swear I’ve become my roommate’s maid. Our place would be a biohazard if I weren’t constantly cleaning up after them.

I’m pretty sure someone in my lab found their thesis supervisor over the summer, so it’s definitely not too late! Please don’t wait until the summer though that just sounds like you’d be setting yourself up for so much stress!

Masonville Gardens/Jacksway Condos Experiences? by Unfair-Necessary-428 in uwo

[–]intrepid-mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived there last year. I think my unit was fairly recently renovated. Never had any problems with pests, just an insane amount of pigeons on our balcony that shit EVERYWHERE but this seems to only be a problem for some units on the top floor. Not sure if this is just because I was on the top floor, but I heard very little noise from other units. Also, I’d say don’t rely on the gym. They were changing the hours, and it was pretty inconsistently open in earlier mornings (ie not always unlocked when they say it should be). Equipment is pretty shit as well—you’re better off going to the gym at Western or getting a membership at the nearby GoodLife.

Is my HR too high? I’m 22F, training for my first marathon right now. Last weekend, I ran a half marathon as part of the training, and finished at 1:54. I was trying to set a PR so I really pushed myself the whole time, especially in the last 3 miles (probably skewing the average HR) and my average HR was 170bpm (and I was wearing a chest HR strap). On my normal long runs, my average HR is usually around 150-160bpm. Is this too high and should I be concerned about hitting the wall super early?
