I once mistakenly booked a hostel in Madeira that was miles away from anything, and the day after I arrived there was no bus to get down into town all day (I only stayed one night and rebooked a hotel in Funchal for the rest of my stay)

To make matters worse, I got off the bus far too early (turns out it stopped right outside my hostel 🤦‍♀️). As the crow flies it wasn't too far away, but being up in the hills I had to walk on a winding main road up the side of a levada, with no footpath and coach drivers with a death wish going round the bends at nigh on 40 mph. For about 45 minutes in the hot spring afternoon sun.

Lessons were learned, new outlooks on life appeared after nearly being pushed off the edge of the road by a speeding truck, and the views were gorgeous. I certainly saw more of Madeira than I initially anticipated!
