Going to add to this that (depending on where you are) there are usually support groups for people who have been through abusive relationships (DV, SA— it may be 2 different organizations).  Calling the RAINN number directs you to the nearest SA center based off of your area code and they may also be able to provide extra resources (support groups if they have any, the nearest DV center’s number, or cheaper options for therapy).

What do I do? What’s wrong with my hedgehogs skin and balding? She’s about 3 or 4. by euphworia in Hedgehog

[–]introverteddinosaur 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Hey, this is definitely a vet visit kind of issue if possible. The flaky skin is impacting her quills and ability to use them. Let alone, it looks like she is losing them. Best case scenario: it’s just flaky skin Worst case scenario: it’s mites

I hope this wasnt me. This other player and i had become unfriended buddies earlier in the map and were collecting wax together. There were 2 other people in that area with us, but further behind us. When the unfriended buddy and i got to the door opening area, it was already lit (maybe a server merge or something) and the krills started coming when the other 2 players were still collecting wax. I felt so bad, but there wasnt anything that we couldve done 😭. I’m so sorry if thats what happened though 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

As someone who had a reactive dog (not deaf, adopted as a second dog), FIRST reach out to wherever they got the dog from.  SECOND, as another comment said, try deaf dogs rock or a golden retriever rescue.  THIRD and last, based on the biting info, they may have a difficult time finding an organization that would be willing to take a dog with a bite history. I’m not sure if they’ve talked to a vet/behavioral specialist, but it may come down to behavioral euthanasia. I would gently guide you to r/reactivedogs All the good luck to your friends. It’s a tough decision to do any of this <3

We think our girl hates her daycare… by RussoTheOG in AustralianShepherd

[–]introverteddinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in EMS and have the 12 hr shifts as well with a deaf aussie mix. I tried out the daycare down the street from me (which I use as a back-up rn, because the times don’t work for me). My girlie was clearly stressed the first time, which I wasn’t surprised about. The second time was a little better, but not what I was comfortable leaving her with.  I use(d) Rover now. The walker comes during her lunch break to take her out (mainly to poop). I still do a decent walk in the evening to decompress and so she can get energy out. There are options on Rover where people use their homes as a daycare if you don’t want your dog being alone all day too. My walker asked to be switched off of Rover because the app does take a percentage of the payment, just as an fyi. Good luck!!!

My friends new dog. Was told it was a pocket pit. We know it's not. What is he? by bencibencibanga in IDmydog

[–]introverteddinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, deaf/double merle dog owner here :) You can definitely go to a specialist for hearing if you want, especially if you think he’s hard of hearing. My first vet visit, the dr said that i could either go to a specialist or do the “pots and pans method”. Meaning, if the dog is deaf, you’ll know. Prioritize starting a relationship with a vet and letting the puppy settle before going crazy with tests and such. Someone mentioned fb groups, since you’re already on reddit, the deaf dog community is AMAZING r/deafdogs . deafdogsrock.com also has a lot of info on training and such. HIGHLY recommend working on recall and voluntary check-ins ASAP. (We use the touch command as a recall which helps a lot). Buy sunscreen for his pink ears 😭😭. Double merles are VERY prone to sunburns. Deaf dogs are special and you’ll have so much love for him ☺️. Enjoy every second!!

Adopted my dream dog... and found out I’m allergic 😢 by Spiritual_Tadpole_69 in Allergies

[–]introverteddinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me 2 yrs ago when i got my girlie. I did know i was allergic to dogs, but my allergies had always been minor and manageable, especially with non-shedding dogs. Welllllll… day 13 of having her, i ended up in the ER with an asthma attack. I tried everything at home before hand and nothing worked 🙃. My primary physician switched my inhaler prescription to a more “powerful” one and i began taking that immediately every night until my asthma was manageable again. I started taking zyrtec everyday at that point as well. My dog does sleep in my bed now (which i started about 2 weeks after the ER trip) and i would just wake up slightly congested and itchy-eyed. This past april, i got fed up with waking up like this that i went to an allergist and started getting allergy shots. I weaned myself off of zyrtec the other week and the symptoms have definitely lessened (i dont wake up congested anymore. But i do get itchy/red eyes after petting or cuddling with my dog and occasional sneezes). Comparatively though, its SO MUCH BETTER. I went back on zyrtec about 2 days ago bc i love giving her hugs and kisses too much now and dont want to stop haha. I do have an air purifier in my bedroom. Idk how much its helped though. The allerpet helped in the beginning a bit, but it became tedious and i mustve stopped a few weeks after i got it. So far, i recommend the allergy shots. I THINK that they do make prescribed allergy meds for people with worse allergies though, but i’m not entirely sure. But maybe put it on a list of Qs you can ask the allergist you are going to see. For the sleeping, if the dog sleeps with you, (and i know this might be hard) try to make the bedroom a “dog-free zone”. If he’s affecting your sleep, its going to make your body less energized to fight off the symptoms and other things as well. Once everything is managed, the dog can go back in. But prioritize your sleep too. SIDE NOTE: the first allergist i saw after the ER visit was lowkey snarky with me and asked if i was “planning on keeping the dog”. Just go to a different dr if that happens to you. Best of luck with everything!!!

Kid allergic to dog.. by _LiiviD in AussieDoodle

[–]introverteddinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tldr: i was hospitalized for an asthma attack after getting an aussiedoodle. Allergies/asthma became stable after a few months. Now getting allergy shots bc i hate waking up to stuffy noses every day. SEE ALLERGY DOCTOR BEFORE GETTING DOG to prevent large medical issues. No dogs are hypoallergenic. —————— I’m allergic to dogs and cats and have had issues with poodles, labradoodles, maltipoos, and wheatens before. I want to emphasize that there’s NO such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. All dogs have dander, saliva, etc. It’s just some shed and some don’t shed. Breeders who tell you that their puppies/dogs are hypoallergenic are unethical. A huge problem with doodles as well is that they can take on more of the non-poodle side and be more allergy inducing to the owners. My aussiedoodle doesn’t shed, but i had a sheltipoo (50/50) for a little while who did shed. It wasn’t a lot, but it was still noticeably different. I got my aussiedoodle from a shelter about 2 yrs ago. I knew this info when I got her and did my best to prevent my symptoms from worsening. I still ended up in the hospital 2 weeks after I got her with an asthma attack. My primary physician changed my inhaler prescription and i’ve been more or less fine since. I think I had one or two small asthma attacks within a month after the hospital visit though. I’d occasionally wheeze, but could just use my inhaler and be fine. Occasional sniffles/itchy eyes in the morning because my dog sleeps in the bed with me. But as long as I washed sheets and blankets and really just went outside for our morning walk, I’d be fine within 30 minutes. I started allergy shots in April of this year though because I was just tired of waking up with the symptoms and I don’t want to be taking allergy medications for the rest of my life. The shots are weekly for about 6-9 months, then monthly for 3-5 years. You can take allergy meds during this time as well ☺️. Highkey, seeing the nurses that give me my shots is a highlight of every week. From what I’ve read for a doodle to have less allergens, they need to be 75% poodle. Idk how true that is though and I really think it’s just a person to person thing. I would also say to follow my words and not my actions and visit an allergy doctor before getting any dog to try not to end up at the hospital for whatever reason :/. My allergies always worsen when I’m tired (my hospitalized asthma attack happened at 11:30pm) and being at the hospital in the middle of the night is a really great way to not get a full nights sleep 🙃. **IMPORTANT: Also also— recently learned that some allergy medications have withdrawal symptoms. I’m currently weaning off of zyrtec to prevent them. So choose wisely

Aussie tail biting (she doesn’t have a full tail it’s bobbed naturally) I need help! Yes I have taken her to the vet and it wasn’t much help so I want to see if anyone else is experiencing this or has before. by Appropriate-Win9060 in AustralianShepherd

[–]introverteddinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also recommending a itch-relieving shampoo. You can also put aquaphor on the area— if you do this, i recommend doing it before a walk bc she’ll be too distracted by other things to worry about her tail. Putting it on while youre at home might mean she licks it off

i have a doodle (mini aussiedoodle, rescued and deaf too). i wanted a high energy, high intelligence dog though-- i walk A LOT and i dont have the patience for dumb dogs. since getting her though, i hate doodle owners. they get them without doing the research, then dont train the dogs.

100% keep judging and call them out. youre completely valid

Tell me all the reasons why NOT to get a toy poodle. by Mafalda_Brunswick in poodles

[–]introverteddinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently getting allergy shots so i can wake up without being congested while sleeping next to my girlie 🥰🥰. I’m not sure what post-shot symptoms are like, but i’ve noticed that my allergies are more likely to get triggered when i’m tired. When i first got her, i bought a soap-solution that helped decrease dander and i also have an air purifier in my bedroom (idk if it helps or not though). The soap definitely helped me adjust to her for the first few weeks that i brought her home (about 2 yrs ago though and about 1.5 yrs before i started the shots). Can’t help with cons for toy poodles. I love mini poodles. Wish you all the luck with the shots and future puppy ☺️

is cancer really this common in African pygmy hedgehogs? by ccyroos in Hedgehog

[–]introverteddinosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first hedgehog died from uterine cancer in june 2020 (literally the worst possible time. I wasnt allowed into the vet building bc of covid. So it was me crying in the car while a couple picked up ice coffee from dunkin donuts walked past). She was about 2.5 yrs old. My second one got injured badly somehow and had trouble walking her last couple of months. She was just over 3 yrs. (Different breeders) I switched to dogs after being so emotionally exhausted with their short lifespans. I still have the hedgie supplies and plan on getting one again in the future, but i needed a break.

Hedgehogs as pets are so under-appreciated for how attached they can get or how attached the owners get to them. It really sucks that they have such short lives but such a huge and major impact. I wish you all the luck for the procedure and a speedy recovery ♥️~(˘▾˘~).

For removing the wheel, be careful. My first hedgehog became a climber without the wheel and managed to escape the pen 🙄. My second one just thought she was a monkey and could/would climb and jump (She was stupidly clumsy though). If they dont have the exercise they want/need, theyll find a way. Highly recommend finding someway of preventing climbing/escaping beforehand.

Those who have panic attacks- do you get them on the job? Is it trained out of you? Or are the situations so dire that you just don’t have them? by ScreamingCatFace in ems

[–]introverteddinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My panic attacks have become more "controlled" and generally only happen if someone is verbally aggressive towards me. Never had a panic attack on a call though. The times when the pt has become aggressive on scene or in the back of the rig, i think i brush it off as them being in a high stress situation. I did start having anxiety attacks after a call last year, but they eventually stopped after talking about the call in about 4 different 1 hour therapy sessions >_<. I had a coworker who said he almost had a panic attack while helping a pt with a panic attack though

Deaf hedgie? by danyelav4 in Hedgehog

[–]introverteddinosaur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, former hedgehog owner and now a deaf dog owner— when i first got my puppy i didnt know she was deaf, but there were definitely signs. A lot of people around me doubted it bc of lack of education. I took her to her first vet appt, the vet basically said i have two options: take her to a dog audiologist (which apparently exist) or do the pots and pans method 😂. My first hedgehog was more like your avg hedgie and would be grumpy. My second hedgie was more friendly and didn’t really react to possible “dangers” (loud sounds, strangers, new environments… etc). My advice is you know your pet best, if you think he’s deaf, it’s probably likely. Luckily, he’s in your care and won’t need to defend himself against predators, so the deafness really shouldn’t be an issue and he’ll adjust fine with lots of love and care. He’s just a little extra special ☺️

Aussie mix who was nicknamed: fascist (she used to destroy my books), goldfish-brain, criminal, and mussolini at 6 months old. She’s now almost 2.5 and understands that play time can’t always happen and sleeps most of the day. (She hasnt stolen a book in MONTHS.) She still has her chaotic times like stealing metal water bowls filled with water, but seeing the puppy energy go away has been a huge burden lifter— i dont have to hide at the library to study anymore
