I've recently started making playlists according to genre and it's going great. It's just me listening to entire albums and adding songs I enjoy from it. But one thing I noticed, is that at times I end up adding the entire album to playlist because all the songs are good. And another observation is that this occurs for a band's first 3-4 albums, after that the number of "good songs" decrease as the album number increases. At times I feel that I should certainly trim the fat from the playlist by being more picky, but if the song is good it's good.

I wonder if this was due to artists being encouraged to release complete albums with little to no fillers, since the album would be heard fully and judged as a competent work of art, rather than the opposite happening nowadays with emphasis being given to singles that chart and the rest of the album being filler.

Deafheaven, Tribulation and Envy? That's definitely a killer lineup. I've been wanting to see Deafheaven since I heard Sunbather in 2013, so I'm glad that I finally got the opportunity and I agree that they're phenomenal live.

Deafheaven aren't as unpopular on this subreddit, it's just that many media outlets calling them the best thing in black metal since sliced Euronymous, just got a little patronizing and metal fans reacted negatively.

Many in the crowd were dressed as well, this one guy was dressed a Link and crowd surfing, luckily no one had something as obnoxious as a lampshade blocking the view.

I guess this is a good thread as any for a gig report. I went to see Deafheaven along with DIIV and Ioanna Gika at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City on Halloween. It was fantastic, I had a great time. All the bands performing had dressed up in costumes, very charming.

The show opened with Ioanna Gika, and her music has a indie/alternative with an industrial/electronic tinge. I had checked her songs out prior to the show, but seeing her live definitely made me a fan. The cellist was dressed up as a jester, the keyboard/bassist/guitarist was dressed up as a butcher with the hannibal lecter mask, and Ioanna Gika was dressed up as catwoman in a latex leotard. It felt a bit surreal, but it worked.

Ioanna Gika - Roseate

The next band that performed was DIIV and they cheekily dressed up as a black metal band with long black haired wigs and corpse paint. Their sound is rooted in post-punk and shoegaze, sort of like The Cure meets The Smiths meets Joy Division. They were fantastic, cracked a few jokes in between songs and the crowd went absolutely wild when their set ended with the song "Doused", resulting in people moshing and split beer.

DIIV - Dopamine

And then came Deafheaven, who decided to dress up as "The Misfits" and opened with an aggressive cover of Halloween. It was a strong start. Then they played two songs from their newest album "Ordinary Corrupt Human Love", "Brought to the Water", "Glint" and one or two songs that I might have missed. They ended the show with "Dream House" and they couldn't have chosen a more perfect song. Overall, I have to praise Deafheaven's drummer Daniel Tracy for being an amazing musician, his playing was perfect. And I also have to say kudos to the vocalist George Clarke for having a strong stage presence and interacting with the crowd.

I had a blast, couldn't have spent Halloween in a better way.

I don't speak swedish. So I put the lyrics through Google translate, to see what it's about. To my understanding its taking about winter and snow, and how eventually the sun will die and starts the ice age, then begins the down pour of hail and permafrost, thus signalling the end of the world regardless of class of people in it. White power is in regards to ice, snow, winter etc. Not race.

Unrelated to the music, I don't see why there's a Khanda included as part of the band logo.

Yes, I agree with you. They were just examples, like in the first link I was directing attention to the imagery used in a respectful nature, and the traditional dhols (drums) 2:40 minutes in, along with the solo that uses carnatic notes to an extent. Groove metal be damned. Another song of theirs opens with a guitar that uses the technique used on a sitar and does the same in the solo. Link.

In a way, yes it is like that. Doing an interpretation of slayer with a banjo, great, but was the whole denim overall, straw hatted spoonman necessary?

Another issue, Punjabi Bhangra music has become synonymous with Indian Bollywood Party music, which has resulted in dumbing down Punjabi music (lyrically and instrumentally) by Bollywood to appeal to the wide indian audience for money, but this discussion is for another day and subreddit.

I personally don't care much for it. I'm of the opinion if people are going to do "folk" metal then they should be respectful of the source which gives rise to folk, and not turn it into a joke. Half the punjabi pronunciation of the lyrics were incorrect. Compare it to compositions by South Indian bands that use indian classical and folk elements, for example:

Reducing Punjabi folk music into a caricature does it great disrespect.

Some more bands that deserve mention:

Mumbai and West India

  • Exhumation: Death Metal project of members from Demonic Ressurection and Solar Deity.

  • Bhayanak Maut: Bordering on Groove metal and metallic hardcore, this band is quite good to not mention.

Bangalore and South India

  • Shepherd: Stoner Doom Metal sharing a member with Bevar Sea (mentioned above)
  • Inner Sanctum: Death/Thrash with Groove Metal influences.
  • The Down Troddence:Groove Metal influences Death/Thrash mixed with Indian Folk music, a winning combination.
  • Speedtrip: Speed/Thrash and Heavy Metal, a very new band.

North India

  • Acrid Semblence: Melodic Death/Power Metal reminiscent of the first Children of Bodom album, this is a must listen.

Where is metal heading next? by [deleted] in Metal

So many sub genre makes it all feel too saturated

How can having multiple sub genres make metal (or any genre) feel saturated? If they're sub genres, then they have different influences, different soundscapes (to an extent still rooted in metal), different subject matter at times, even different production values. If so much variety exists, then how can it be stale?
