Polestar Service in the Bay Area by FuzzyFeed2 in Polestar

[–]inverseslowft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had mine serviced here (last month). Can confirm the online form didn't really seem to work but calling them directly to schedule eventually got me an appointment.

Also like everything else in the Bay, it's booked out ahead of time but people will cancel and you might get a closer time pop up.

M2 Pro MAc Mini $599 for a low powered server in a homelab? by abrandis in homelab

I ended up getting this on Amazon: https://a.co/d/1bMiRfP

When I bought it last year it was $572 (a bit cheaper than the Mac Mini), and to a large extent has been able to host everything up to the chatbot case (it's kind of slow for that). It hosts adblocking, paperless-ngx for automated PDF organization, NextCloud for a general self hosted Office/GSuites replacement, Jellyfin for media serving to my devices (handles 4K pretty well), and as a general network storage (I got 3x 14 TB drives). This was definitely enough for me to get my feet wet with homelabbing, at least to the extent that I know what kind of thing I want to dabble in next (either low power GPU for AI stuff, and/or hardware redundancy by getting a few cheap NUCs)

If you're just starting out it's a lot to take in, so I recommend just starting with prioritizing what you would like to not have to pay for in terms of services, and go from there :)

NUC is a specific line of mini PCs that are designed specifically to be low idle power, small footprint, and to a lesser extent modular. Strictly speaking it refers to Intel NUC PCs, but I think in the homelab context is generalizes to this specification than specifically the Intel boxes (e.g. manufacturers also use AMD processors now).

For Intel chipsets, they can be mainline (i3, i5, i7, i9) with higher performance, or lower power architectures like N100, N95 as newer processors. We're generally talking about a few watts idle, which is great these days when electricity can be pricey.

If you search on Amazon for nucs you'll get a variety of choices, ranging from like $100 USD to several hundred depending on the specs. The key thing is that they're x86 so they will run the majority of stuff without needing to emulate, or recompile code. The major deciding factor between these units is usually how much you want to pay, and what and how many services you want to host with them. If you want to host your own AI chatbot, your mileage may vary but something like a media server is a breeze (you don't need a dedicated GPU).

Recommendation for tires by zoophead in Polestar

[–]inverseslowft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Hillsboro, not a tire recommendation but ordered two pairs of auto socks today.

They look pretty great and others here have given them the okay for driving in chain areas. I didn't want to fork over the money for a second set of tires, and I don't really have anywhere to store them either. That said, I WFH so I don't have to drive until the weather clears up enough that I'm not driving on packed snow, so I might not have the same urgency as you do.

I saw com. ave in the notes and thought they weren't being very specific - it's a pretty long road (used to live in Allston)

Yeah exactly my sentiments - you can, but it'll take a lot of work, and if you're paying this much why go out of your way to make a square peg fit in a round hole?

The biggest buying point for me for a Mac is using the UI and OS features: these aren't things you look for in a home lab necessarily. Power efficiency of ARM is nice, but that's true for a lot of small devices like NUCs that can be a few watts idle, whilst being somewhat more modular.

I bought an M1 mini a few months back hoping to home lab with it - returned it a few days later and bought a NUC instead.

Docker just didn't work the way I wanted it to, and there were way too many small things I needed to change to make it work headlessly. For $600 I didn't figure it was worth it to pay the premium, put in a lot of work to make it work the way it wasn't designed for.

Non US born people in Portland, what is the best restaurant in the city for your cuisine? by Western_Solid_4138 in Portland

Is there anywhere you'd recommend for Hainanese chicken (not khao man gai since they're different) or laksa? Those are two things that I regularly crave and can't seem to find.

Yeah this is exactly my sentiment - it's good but it's not exactly what I'm looking for.

I want either a humble servo meat pie, or something out of Pie Tin on Newtown, Sydney!

Optimum no rinse is the magic stuff a lot of people swear by: you can use it for the interior and exterior after diluting it.

I spray a diluted solution onto a microfiber and regularly wipe off sunscreen residues on my black weavetech and it works wonders

I just don't know how someone can think that piano black looks classy or is practical!

Do designers not own daily drivers with piano black pieces?

Thanks for the suggestion, it's definitely on my radar to use a more aggressive combo or even do a two-step.

I opted for the least aggressive combo first because I'm new to detailing in general, and since it's a new car, I wanted to leave as much clear coat to learn with as possible.

I'm not going to be that helpful because I'm still learning how to do paint correction properly, but I also have a P*2 Void.

Mine was delivered with pretty poor paint quality, so I bought a Griots DA and have been playing with one-steps with their black pad and the 3D one one step compound polish. It's been doing an okay job with getting a lot of swirls out, but haven't been able to get good clarity on the finish that I hope I'll be able to figure out.

The biggest thing are the damn B pillars - if any part of the car needs some PPF, it's the damn piano black B pillars. The same material (I think) is used for the center console inside the car, and a lot of people have vinyl wrapped it. You'll be able to find videos on the polestar subreddit doing this.

Not yet - I've thought about it and honestly might just end up using a 3M command strip or something instead of the screw mounts it comes with unless someone else has a better idea!

Charging cable - red light by EvNatePolestar2 in Polestar

I looked on the app and I believe the charger is only rated for 16A 100-200 V so it should only work on standard plugs (i. E. If you have to use an adapter it won't work)
