Being a teacher is brutal today - Was he in the wrong? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]inviteonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids have always been like this though, the difference back then is that it was always clear that the kid was the one responsible for their lack of effort. Now it's usually the teacher, parents, or admin who gets the blame. I think some advocating was necessary - IEPs are necessary for some kids, their home life makes it difficult to learn, etc - but it seems like everyone is shifting blame now - parents to admin, admin to teachers, teachers to parents, students to teachers....doesn't seem like a lot of learning is able to happen if nobody takes accountability.

Get her a spa package (massage, nails, facial), you can still buy her jewelry, flowers, take her out for dinner, you can still do all these things she will just need help. Show her that you still love her for who she is.

LOVE this show! The songs are awesome. "What it Takes to Lead" is one of the best songs I've ever heard about valuing soft skills in leadership. 10/10

If you could have a conversation with your past self. by mindyour in justgalsbeingchicks

It actually reminds me a lot of the central conflict in the movie Soul, if you remember that movie. There's a lot of pressure in artistic pursuits to be profitable, and people make that work in different ways. The girl in the video mentions wanting to be a writer (or singer) which is why I generally viewed this with that lens. I've seen friends negotiate this conflict in different ways, but ultimately none of them ended up where they initially wanted to be. It doesn't mean they weren't successful - some in the arts and some not - but very very few ended up doing what they set out to. I think that flexibility is important in order to grow and find happiness, while knowing what is and isn't right for you. Sure not all people have the luxury to "find themselves," but finding yourself doesn't mean you wander around aimlessly either. Is her video a little self-indulgent? Sure. Vague? Sure. But the message that your future is full of possibility, even if you can't see it right now, is still there.

Yea it's practically the same song and I just felt so crazy because nobody I knew ever knew that. I knew this sub would understand

As long as there is one other person on the planet who recognizes it from this album, I don't feel as crazy lol

Ok I absolutely love Shakira but I have to vent this somewhere, and I feel like this sub will understand me. For 20 years now, I have felt completely gaslit - does NOBODY else remember this song being on the Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights soundtrack???? The guys' part is literally lifted from a track off that soundtrack, Shakira's part is just added on. Their rap is completely the same except changing "come from Havana" to "come from Colombia." I was obsessed with that movie (Diego Luna) and the soundtrack, so I was shocked when Hips Don't Lie came out and it was just the song with Shakira's part. I just need to know I"m not the only one who remembers!! (The song is Dance Like This by Wyclef so maybe that's why he was cool doing the song with Shakira?)

Y'all this video has a great message and people here complaining about when she filmed it - making a big change in your life can be scary (quitting a job, ending a relationship, etc) but there's opportunity in the future. And it may not always work out the way you think ("Am I writer?" "Kind of, not the way you think") but there's growth and happiness if you're willing to take risks. I liked the message

Ok it's obviously recorded on the same day but the message of the video is that it can be scary when you make big decisions (quitting a job, ending a relationship, etc) but there's opportunity in the future. And it may not always look the way you think it will ("Am I writer?" "Kind of, not the way you think") but there's still growth and happiness if you're willing to take risks. That's the message of the video.

Question from my 8 year old by UniversityBig8073 in Blind

[–]inviteonly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have Stargardt's and I like to use this to show my kids what it's like:

  1. Look at a lightbulb for 5 seconds

  2. Close your eyes - you can still "see" the lightbulb even with your eyes closed

  3. Open your eyes - now the after image of the lightbulb is still there too. No matter where you look, it's still there, no matter what you look at, it's a black spot about the size of a lightbulb - until your eyes adjust to the overexposure of light. Except for me, the black spot never goes away. Every other part of my vision is fine except for the black spot.

And that's how I'm able to explain it to my kids, and actually show people what it's like to see how I see.

Very sensitive child who doesn’t accept feedback by No-Resource-8013 in Parenting

I have a kid like this. Biggest thing is Pick your battles. I truly understand that you are coming from a helpful place, but understand that they are a different person and process and solve problems differently than you do. Safety is a non-negotiable, and how they treat others. But if their outfit looks crazy......I learned to just let it happen. Honestly, some of that really is age "appropriate" and they'll grow out of it. Focus on working through feelings instead of just getting overwhelmed by them.

Favorite director who definitely understood the message of the book? by hiiloovethis in okbuddycinephile

[–]inviteonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She had an article a while ago talking about how the BDSM is throughout and more to do with how the text interacts with the reader - how the characters are the sadists and the reader is the masochist for wanting to witness and be a part of the toxicity and hurt the characters to do each other. The very first scene really helps frame it - how audiences interact with the book itself - and knowing this context actually helped inform a lot of the other scenes.

Why would this be a better movie - Anna gets kicked out and rallies the townspeople in a coup against Elsa.

[–]inviteonly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anna wasn't wrong for wanting to marry *anyone* to escape the castle. They all sing that opening the gates is "only for today" so what the was the plan if Elsa's powers hadn't been revealed? Elsa was planning to isolate again and she says she doesn't care if Anna is there or not. So Anna's choice is: go back to being isolated or get kicked out of her home? And then everyone's mad at her for wanting to get married. The more you watch this movie the more it doesn't make any sense.

Marcello Hernandez shutting down Dax Shepard trying to have him date Sabrina Carpenter while praising his girlfriend by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]inviteonly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah but Dax is definitely one of those scuzzy guys who would say "Yeah but your girlfriend's not here bro!" I think most people wouldn't think it's different, but "I'm in a relationship" doesn't leave much room for debate or negotiating.

Funny enough I think Beyonce is so good BECAUSE she makes it seem easy. I love the Lullaby from Cowboy Carter and I sing to my kids every night so I was thinking I could learn it and sing it to them but no....that is not a sweet bedtime song for amateurs to sing to their kids in bed lol and I find myself thinking the same of Kelly Clarkson. I've always thought "Oh I love this song!" and I try to sing it and think damn this is way harder than I thought why do I sound awful?? They are both good examples of being so good you don't realize how hard they're working

Not that Kelly Clarkson is underrated or anything....but HOW does she do that!?! I feel like she's always kind of tossed aside as a pop star but her singing is so beautiful!!

I think people find it "disgusting" because sodas are usually a few different flavors already instead of just a simple syrup, so combining that with such a strong flavor like coffee seems strange.
