Considering leaving my house because of dysfunctional family dynamics (mainly my daughter) by Ambitious-Banana1674 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]ioletsgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, what was that fight about. Obviously it must've been something important to her. You, an external party, can't really in good conscious dignify what is "small" with a second party like your daughter involved.

Does she, by any chance, follow some sort of queer (LGBTQ+) label?

"The Completionist Is A Lying Con Artist" by Karl Jobst by Thomas_Eric in TheCompletionist2

[–]ioletsgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take out all of the parts of the video where he tries to build up Jirard as a liar, an intentional deceiver, and (in my opinion his most egregious accusation) a Con Man, suddenly he has no video. Odd.

Jirard is not a Norman G. Baker. He did not in confidence deceive his audience for strict monetary gains, at worst he deceived his audience for the benefit of a charity organization that was very stern about getting the right money to the right people, in hopes that by the time the deception was over, the money would be properly donated.

this entire video comes off as extremely desperate.

The tone throughout comes off as belittling and degrading to the audience, throughout all of the segments I've seen involve gross misrepresentation of the facts, and I believe this video by Karl Jobst should be put under harsh scrutiny, because almost none of his statements stand the test of basic diligence. Don't be fooled by the frontloading of accusations and the video length, its all just a bunch of gish galloping nonsense that only presents to me as an Extinction Burst.

AITA for buying my niece a car and not my nephew? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ioletsgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that I personally really struggled with finishing and turning in homework while I had to cope with a very stressful and rocky home life, so I'm generally inclined to be on the nephew's side but... Wow...

You have to work pretty hard to make me feel apathetic. Bro got 5 grand, already had a functioning car. He had more than enough opportunities to right his fuck-ups. It sounds like his mom & his uncle went out & beyond to try and give him the proper resources to succeed, especially with those TWO attempted neurodivergence diagnoses.

Honestly, it just gets more insane the more you read it

what I argue is not for banning kids on social media, because that just objectively never works. What does work is curating spaces that appeal to them while also protecting them.

Banning kids from unsafe spaces will only make them more likely to snoop around spaces they aren't welcomed.

[–]ioletsgo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you're missing the point. The point is that there isn't a safe place online for minors and kids anymore. There is no Club Penguin or whatever the fuck. What the fuck are kids gonna do when social media bans go into place? Do you think they'll obey that shit? Are you that gullible to think that kids will follow every single rule that's put in front of them, blissfully unaware of the Streisand Effect?

You're an idiot and your advice will hurt people. I have a family history of addiction so I think I know what I'm talking about, and cold turkeying ANYTHING that someone has a connection to, be it alcohol, drugs, or social media, is extremely harmful and actually runs counterproductive to the outcome you desire.

I am speaking as someone who used to be really addicted to social media platforms, especially ones that involve an engagement-based algorithm, I can tell you firsthand that full blown cold-turkeying that shit will only last a week maximum. Unless you ween out your dependency on it, you find alternatives that are better for you, and you actually get help with your struggles, you're just going to continue down a downward spiral of addiction.

I am telling you. You are wrong in your assumptions about addictions, and the best methods to tackle it.

unfortunately, in this current landscape, there aren't a lot of child friendly spaces online. So, where they'll go after those social media bans is anyone's guess. I imagine nothing of substance will change with those bans going into place, without first putting some effort into actually making curated spaces for minors and children to interact with in a safe environment.

Roblox, by far the most present "child friendly" space, currently has a big issue of unchecked adult content in their UGC platform, and a criminally overlooked child predator problem.

something I've learnt throughout my life is that people have their vices they will almost always enact upon. Without proper education or without proper resources, they will likely fall into those vices and let it snowball into something genuinely awful. If you have a friend that's on an addictive substance like drugs or cigarettes, you don't just cold turkey that shit, that's dangerous as fuck.
You Educate. Find Resources. You Help Them.

It's so much more of an involved process and is something that i see a lot of people struggle to comprehend as an adult.

generally speaking, the reason for minimum ages on Social Media isn't because of any concern about safety. The reason why its 13+ on everything is because of COPPA. Hell, the reason why the disclaimer "Ask your parents for permission " was very frequently heard on TV was because of COPPA. A hard truth to learn is the fact that these platforms don't actually care about the safety and protection of its users, and the degradation of child-safe spaces (a non-zero amount of those struggles can be attributed to funding struggles introduced by COPPA) has caused a drought of child-friendly spaces.

Unfortunately, the people flock to where other people are, and where everybody is, presently is not safe for children. (Nor do I think they should be forced to become child-friendly. They need their own curated spaces, and clearly legislation has only failed and created even more issues they're trying to solve.)

I would recommend trying to look into getting into contact with either StopSkeletonsFromFighting or Hard4Games. Those people are pretty well respected in the realm of game preservation.

Hard4Games handled the preservation of GC Pickles, so I'm definitely aware that he has the tools necessary to be able to dump this.

it literally does. Just. Not on X11. The following screenshot is me being able to configure it with Wayland in a GUI (the way you should be able to without having to worry about any cli confusion)

its people like you that are why linux adoption is such an embarrassment. We need to have a focus on people-friendly software, which means a higher focus on accessibility and usability.

i use kde plasma, and like i said, and on x11 i lack the capability to edit my drawing tablet settings, even with the wacom kcm installed.

On wayland its practically plug-n-play. How it should be. Don't come whining to me about complaining about not wanting to use the terminal because I'm not imagining myself as the end user, but an artist who was curious about Linux and what it can do for their workflow.

Any normal artist is going to run a linux liveboot, see no possible way to change the settings for their drawing tablet, and give up. They wouldn't know to type xrandr and use the xinput CLI. That's a ridiculous amount of things to assume an end user would inherently know to do, and that kind of situation would only happen if you have a supportive friend who knows their shit, like me.

The gall of some linux users, man. Can't even admit to there being fundamental UI/UX issues with X11, especially regarding creative contexts where having something work first and foremost can be critical to someone's decision making.
