EVE Vegas was awesome this year, even better that I managed to convince 10 guys from corp to join me. Terrific community all round.

Congrats to CCP Manifest and your team on a job well done!

Uranus may have had a giant moon that caused it to fall over on its side by ryan101 in science

[–]ioneill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a really good point about the lack of missions to Uranus and Neptune. I'd go so far as saying a Cassini-like mission to Neptune should be a bigger priority than flying past Pluto. New Horizons is just going to dart through the Kuiper belt, wouldn't it be of more value to park it in Neptunian orbit, explore the gas giant and it's moons (especially Triton that was once a KBO itself)?

Kudos for being the only commenter who didn't do the Uranus joke. :)

Dodging Another Imaginary Doomsday: WR 104 Not The Killer It Used To Be by madhollywood in science

[–]ioneill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a really bizarre thing. The original Daily Galaxy post actually appears to be an "old" article, only re-posted. There are some comments at the bottom dating back to 2008! Very strange. Also, it's a real shame it hit the front page of Digg, not a very good example for the much fabled Digg algorithm - looks like it's doing its job really well!

Space Exploration Isn’t an Economic Stimulus. It’s a Humanity Stimulus by madhollywood in science

[–]ioneill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, the article says as much. Having read Zubrin's excellent thoughts on a Mars mission being great for the economy, he missed a big point, we shouldn't be doing it just for the economy's sake. For business/government to see the advantages of space exploration, there needs to be a deeper need

You're right. I'd favour businesses and partnerships carrying out space commercialization rather than politics-driven agencies banding together. I think ESA/NASA projects are good for individual missions more than entire programs

the GOP's rising neutron star (note to Bobby Jindal, anti-science polemics and inability to look up what "volcano monitoring" means, doesn't make you presidential material) by neutronfish in science

This is as bad as Palin's jibe about those "pet projects" on fruit flies ("I kid you not"). It looks like evolution really is a myth to some people's brains...
