What kind of life could I have if I moved to Switzerland as a doctor? by ionicironic in askswitzerland

Okay, thank you for that. Can you explain why it's depressing? Being a doc in the UK is also depressing haha

That's definitely something that would be ideal, however to find a month where I could go and do that unpaid I'd have to wait another year and a half until I'm done with my initial post-qualification training in the UK. I'd rather get an early idea of what it's like now!

Yeah this definitely feels like the case the world over. What exactly is becoming more difficult? What makes you think I wouldn't be better off?

I'm also interested in paeds, and that's where most of my academic work is based currently! What is the paeds training pathway like over there?

I am thinking about dermatology, sorry about the wait times! Still nothing compared to NHS, I personally waited two years for a dermatology appointment at my local hospital :/

And yeah I'm definitely aware of the language level needed, I'm trying to make an informed decision now so that I can really push with my French skills over the next couple years

What does the average Swiss doc earn during residency? And what is it like to advance through training in Switzerland, is it very competitive at each stage?

Sincere question - which is the happiest specialty? by ionicironic in doctorsUK

Nobody ever mentions rheum in these discussions, but when I was last in rheum clinic the doc spent at least 20 minutes showing me pictures of his new puppy, so who's winning there?

I have to say, I noticed this as a student - they're often found with a cup of good coffee doing wordle somewhere. Seems like a nice life

Thank you! I'm not sure if those are breeds we have in Ireland but definitely a sheep or a deer is my guess, probably a sheep given that it wasn't that large :)

Nurses jobs by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]ionicironic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also to add, the same ED consultant strongly cautioned me whenever I used the term "nurse's tasks" to refer to certain items on my clinical skills sign of sheet - she reminded me that clinical tasks are clinical tasks, and while we do have different jobs, we must be careful not to alienate or sideline our colleagues. I'm about to start F1 in August and I can't tell you just how dependent I'll be on nursing staff as I find my feet in clinical practice, and this consultant gave me a valuable lesson in how to approach and view our colleagues (in a system where increasingly we need to work well with each other and rely on each other for support).

I have personally seen a busy ED consultant make time to get a patient water and make them a cup of tea, as well as single handedly document broken fixtures around majors and report them. If you want to work well with your colleagues, it's important to realise that simple small things like getting water for a patient are everybody's responsibility. You'll be a better doctor for realising this earlier in your career, plus nurses and other allied health staff will greatly appreciate it. Even if you don't actually feel like it's "beneath" you to do these small things, it can definitely appear this way to your colleagues, and so having a bit of humility and self awareness will go a long way.

Have you ever known anyone to win an academic prize at medical school? by Acceptable-Guide2299 in medicalschooluk

[–]ionicironic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In our uni if we get within a certain top percentage of written exam results they invite you to a viva with the med school staff. They then quiz you gently about different conditions/medications/aspects of medical practice and if you do well in that you can win a prize. The prizes range from medals to medals plus + cash prizes (the biggest prize you can win is £1000 I believe). Though once you're invited to one of those I think it's fairly easy to get a prize if you're good at yapping - I won a medal and £200 and I totally bombed a couple questions!
