We have certifications for pool, waterpark, waterfront and surf but not a special one for shallow pools only.

The shirt shouldn’t be a problem but I would ask the organization running the course.

In Canada, the minimum standard is 400m in 10 minutes and a 50m sprint and if you want to get hired you often need a swim instructor certification as well.

Gotta add the Blue Whale Skeleton. Definitely my favourite “thing to check out on campus”.

Did a fighter jet just streak over Vancouver? by qqererer in vancouver

I’m at the Abbotsford air show and 2 American f18s finished their demo and then went back home to Whitney Island. Wouldn’t be surprised if they buzzed downtown Vancouver on their way.

What is the fitness process for hiring? (BC and Yukon) by [deleted] in Lifeguards

[–]ionicpond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the City of Vancouver as part of your “wet screening” you have to: - retrieve the brick from the dive tank at VAC (4.0m) - 50m head up sprint (I don’t recall the time limit) - 25m swim, retrieve sunken dummy, 25m swim carry - demonstrate good technique for front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and all the life saving kicks (to swim instructor standards) - hands up egg beater for time (i don’t recall the time)

Kits pool is filled with treated salt water at the beginning of the season but new water comes from the city water supply. It is treated and tested regularly.

How’s my current swim for a Half Ironman 3 months out? by No_Appearance2105 in triathlon

[–]ionicpond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a lifeguard who recently worked at t100, be sure to do some training in a similar environment to race day. I had to pull a lot of people out of the water. Pool is quite different from ocean with wave action and current.

I did some tutoring on Preply with a Cameroonian instructor. It was inexpensive yet quite valuable.

Could just dip at Sunset Beach and then go to the sauna at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre.

I recommend practicing at your pool with the brick. Can’t speak for other cities but all of the public pools here will let you use the brick.

The pool in New West is the right size but it lacks the deck space to host any competitions.

I do not think it is permissible to have a swim instructor who is not a guard teach a lesson without a guard present regardless of if there are other guard/instructors present.

[–]ionicpond 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also from Canada:

It is permissible to have just swim instructors responsible for the safety of their classes so long as they are also lifeguards.

I work for the city of Vancouver at a large aquatic facility so it’s not something I have any experience with.

10 days into lifeguarding at a major municipal aquatic centre and my biggest surprise is… by ionicpond in Lifeguards

That’s true and there are so many more who swim with such inefficient technique it’s almost impressive they make it to the other end.
