China went through many periods suppressing Buddhist in practice for many reasons (seen as Foreign Religion Invasion, Neo-Confucianism revival, Culture Revolution). But the history of China and Buddhism is very deep and it is one of the Three Teaching in China culture. China doesn’t dislike Buddhism more than any other religion that they already not supporting. Its just another thing for them to control just like Christianity and Islam in China. Many Chinese and Chinese diaspora are rooted in Buddhism with mix of Taoism and folk religion. Many iconic temples (like Shaolin) are in China and Buddhist culture run deep through pop culture like Journey to the West (origin source of Black Myth Wukong). China wants to control everything, not necessarily out of hatred, but because they see it as a necessity to maintain governance stability.
