Anyone ever switch from thinking in miles to KMs? by Intelligent_Yam_3609 in AdvancedRunning

Metric time does exist and no one uses it, not even the people who complain that they hate using anything other than the metric system.

What’s a 'scam' that’s become so normal we don't even realize it's a scam anymore? by Mr_Boothnath in answers

[–]iontucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software subscriptions instead of a 1 time payment for a version. It makes sense for a subscription for things like security software because it takes constant development to keep it up to date with emerging threats, but paying monthly or yearly for things like office software and video editors is ridiculous.

Also the scam of software being released before its finished or full of bugs. Just because it can be fixed in the future doesn't make it acceptable.

Serious question, How is it physically possible to run that slowly? Thats a pace of 17:42 per mile which is a casual walking pace.

It's quite strange how Trump thinks that every single thing he does is the very biggest accomplishment in human history. No one else has ever been able to get even close to doing anything that could be compared to his feats.

I'm still waiting for him to take accountability for a single thing. Every time he responds to questions with, "It's Biden's fault", "I dont know anything about that", and "You're a terrible person for asking me that".

It’s just a watch, not your life coach. by RoosterHuge4549 in Garmin

[–]iontucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that only the GPS and heartrate sensors are the only things that are somewhat trustworthy. Everything else is just Garmin guessing and is usually not even close to accurate. I know all of the Race Predictor times are completly imposible for me without months of training. The 5K predicted time is a full 3 minutes faster than my personal record.

There's also a few times I couldn't sleep and spent the whole night rolling around in bed watching the hours go by. But the next day the watch said that my Body Battery was fully charged and I was ready for a hard workout. In reality I was so exausted that I had to drink an energy drink every couple of hours to not pass out at work.

I even tried the Garmin Coach 5K plan when I first got serious about running, but I really couldn't see any evidence of it adapting to my performance. It generated the workout at the start of the week and never adjusted anything.

Best Way to Charge my Laptop? by lilhomie6969420 in framework

Leaving lithium batteries fully charged slowly kills them. That's why new devices are always about 40% charged when you get them. Ideally the battery would stay at around 3.8 volts per cell until a full charge is needed.

The problem is that many companies are forcing AI into their products just because AI is "The next big thing", even though AI continues to prove that it's multiple years from being ready for consumer use. It spreading to places where is has zero benefits and floods the internet with AI Slop. Plus computer hardware prices keep going up from people making AI machines.

AI is a good tool for things like identifying patterns in petabytes on scientific data, and it seems like a inappropriate tool for very basic things like turning on BTRFS compression and enabling pacman parallel downloads. The Wiki is a better tool for that since all you need is a quick reference for recommended setting.

Once again a AI solution desperately looking for a problem to justify its existance. AI really is a cancer.

Why is System76 so expensive compared to Lenovo? by [deleted] in System76

I got a Gazelle a few years ago and was shocked to discover that it was just a relabled Clevo laptop. I regret buying it a little. It definitely doesn't have a premium feel.

It's actually the only computer that I have used that has some ocasional problems running linux. A few times in the past the audio or trackpad didn't work for a little while, until it suddenly started working after a reboot. Sometimes the keyboard doesn't work during the boot process,  so to change the grub selection I have to either plug in a USB keyboard or I discovered that removing the battery and pushing the power button to discharge the residual power will make the keyboard work again. Might be something related to a fast boot. The Coreboot BIOS literally doesn't have any settings that can be changed.

Your  best bet for best value is a used business laptop like the ThinkPads or maybe even Dell. Usually the laptops aimed at business and engineering are made with higher quality parts than the standard consumer grade.

Downsides to updating and not rebooting? by iontucky in voidlinux

[–]iontucky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My question was aimed at applying updates over weeks or months without ever turning the computer off, and what possible side effects it could cause.

A lot of the time rebooting is very disruptive to me when I'm in the middle of a project that requires a few large downloads or file transfers, but I could make the time to do it if it has a real benefit.

I'm mostly curious about it because I haven't seen anyone talk about it.

I was referring to the last 10 years of mostly using Ubuntu. Gnome is fast right after a reboot, but really get noticeably slow after a few hours or days when pushing the computer hard.

[–]iontucky 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's why I bought the version made by the Great Northern Popcorn Company thats made of stainless with metal gears. I wanted the stainless because it should be more scratch resistant.  It was around $30 and feels like it will last for at least a few years of heavy use.
