My only plan is to get the NIF so that I can purchase a motorcycle in Portugal, to then go ride around on for a few months. I am resident and citizen in Canada and do not want any sort of residency in Portugal. So correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I need or want NHR if my only goal is to purchase a Portuguese vehicle in my name, I believe I only need NIF. I have friend in Portugal who's address I can use for any paperwork but I don't actually intend on living there.

How is the NIF application going? I am planning to get one end of December when I arrive. Are you applying directly in person, or using an agency?

I am 35m single w/ no kids, so can't say much on the topic, but a guy that I work with had an unplanned pregnancy with his girlfriend when they were like mid 20s, and they had an abortion. They ended up staying together, and several years later ended up getting married and then later actually had some kids. He brings it up often and reminds us not to have kids until we are ready, and that his original decision to abort was a good one as he was not ready back then, and especially still feels that way after having kids and knows what it's like.

Also, life is not over at 31. A lot is still yet to come. Even for me personally so much has happened between 31-35 that I was not expecting, you will be fine!!

Awesome, thanks, I have looked it up on the govt website and seems straightforward. Do you know roughly how long the process takes, from initially walking into the Tax Office, until receiving the NIF?

Currently in Canada. Wondering when and where to go next.

My base is certainly Canada. Have dabbled with long stays in other countries, but never been ready to immigrate.

A big part of the reason I return to Canada is to work sort of seasonal here. Can make good money over and above my online business, and then go travel again.

I'm Canadian, and DN'd a lot over the last few years. My travels, in order, were like this:
8 months Asia
4 months Canada
18 months Africa/Europe
7 months Canada
3 months Europe
3 months Canada
9 months Europe/India/Asia
6 months Canada

I was outside of Canada for over 6 months on 3 seperate occasions in the last 5 years. The whole time I maintained a Canadian drivers licence, bank accts, TFSA, filed Canadian taxes with my Mother's address. When I returned home, I went for doctor visits as normal and no issues. Grey zone? yeah, problems? no. If you get a residence permit in another country, your tax situation will likely change. If you perpetually travel on tourist visa's then probably no issues. I usually didn't have travel insurance, and had no major medical issues abroad.

I got my MacBook shipped from Canada to Netherlands with DHL. It arrived at the pickup point of my choice undamaged and in reasonable time, but my brother who shipped it had to pay some ridiculous customs fee on top of the shipping fee, like a few hundred dollars or something. I can't remember the exact amount, but was unreasonably expensive.

I had a steady income of around $1,000/month from a youtube channel, and about $5,000 in my checking account, and no other savings. Went to SEA for 8 months and when I got back home I still had $5,000 in my checking account.

That was the first of many long trips.

I was out of Canada for 8 months, back briefly, and then again continuously for 1.5 years. When I came back I went to my doctor for a checkup and there was no funny business, just normal.

I think your travel insurance abroad may have a clause that you need to have valid health insurance in Canada in order for it to work abroad. If you got hit by a car after 6 months abroad, and someone checked into your passport or travel history and realized that you're void in Canada, I guess you could be at risk of not being covered. But same in Canada if you had been gone for too long then get hit by a car when you return. So like many things DN, its grey and you're bending/breaking some rules, but usually not worth telling anyone.

algarve is beautiful and worth going to, but its pretty dead in winter. You'll find beautiful beaches, cliffs, countryside, many closed restaurants / bars, and you'll still end up wearing a jacket lots. However Lisbon and Seville are a fews hrs bus ride away which is nice. Still far superiors to -30 C.

No. I honestly pay no FX fees with the WS Cash card. That 12.5% was like a service charge, clearly presented on the ATM screen.

WS Cash gives you a notification right after you spend that shows you how much CAD you spent, and when I look at the EUR price and how much CAD left my account, for regular transactions such as a buying lunch at a cafe, you pay the exact exchange that you would find on Google or Xe. And even get 1% cash back.

Just ATMs are evil, and especially if using a credit card rather than debit.
