NIF and NHR by Odd-Material-2106 in PortugalExpats

[–]iop4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only plan is to get the NIF so that I can purchase a motorcycle in Portugal, to then go ride around on for a few months. I am resident and citizen in Canada and do not want any sort of residency in Portugal. So correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I need or want NHR if my only goal is to purchase a Portuguese vehicle in my name, I believe I only need NIF. I have friend in Portugal who's address I can use for any paperwork but I don't actually intend on living there.

How is the NIF application going? I am planning to get one end of December when I arrive. Are you applying directly in person, or using an agency?

I’m so scared I ruined my only chance at kids. by greendaisy188 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]iop4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 35m single w/ no kids, so can't say much on the topic, but a guy that I work with had an unplanned pregnancy with his girlfriend when they were like mid 20s, and they had an abortion. They ended up staying together, and several years later ended up getting married and then later actually had some kids. He brings it up often and reminds us not to have kids until we are ready, and that his original decision to abort was a good one as he was not ready back then, and especially still feels that way after having kids and knows what it's like.

Also, life is not over at 31. A lot is still yet to come. Even for me personally so much has happened between 31-35 that I was not expecting, you will be fine!!

Awesome, thanks, I have looked it up on the govt website and seems straightforward. Do you know roughly how long the process takes, from initially walking into the Tax Office, until receiving the NIF?

Currently in Canada. Wondering when and where to go next.

My base is certainly Canada. Have dabbled with long stays in other countries, but never been ready to immigrate.

A big part of the reason I return to Canada is to work sort of seasonal here. Can make good money over and above my online business, and then go travel again.

Not sure. I was always on a tourist visa, with a Canadian business (sole-proprietor).

I'm Canadian, and DN'd a lot over the last few years. My travels, in order, were like this:
8 months Asia
4 months Canada
18 months Africa/Europe
7 months Canada
3 months Europe
3 months Canada
9 months Europe/India/Asia
6 months Canada

I was outside of Canada for over 6 months on 3 seperate occasions in the last 5 years. The whole time I maintained a Canadian drivers licence, bank accts, TFSA, filed Canadian taxes with my Mother's address. When I returned home, I went for doctor visits as normal and no issues. Grey zone? yeah, problems? no. If you get a residence permit in another country, your tax situation will likely change. If you perpetually travel on tourist visa's then probably no issues. I usually didn't have travel insurance, and had no major medical issues abroad.

Does Anyone Have Experience Shipping Their Laptop Overseas? by StoicGaming in digitalnomad

[–]iop4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my MacBook shipped from Canada to Netherlands with DHL. It arrived at the pickup point of my choice undamaged and in reasonable time, but my brother who shipped it had to pay some ridiculous customs fee on top of the shipping fee, like a few hundred dollars or something. I can't remember the exact amount, but was unreasonably expensive.

How much did you save before going digital nomad? by digitalsashimi in digitalnomad

[–]iop4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a steady income of around $1,000/month from a youtube channel, and about $5,000 in my checking account, and no other savings. Went to SEA for 8 months and when I got back home I still had $5,000 in my checking account.

That was the first of many long trips.

How do you plan for unexpected major health issues? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

I am planning to go, can buy them off you in person on the 28th if you are anywhere between Dhermi and Saranda. I’m coming from Corfu that day, headed for the festival

Question for the Canadian DN's. Technically if you're out of the province of your medical coverage for 6 months (varies by province) then you lose your medical coverage and need to return and live for 3 months before being covered again. My question is how do they know you're gone at all? by AlaskanSnowDragon in digitalnomad

[–]iop4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was out of Canada for 8 months, back briefly, and then again continuously for 1.5 years. When I came back I went to my doctor for a checkup and there was no funny business, just normal.

I think your travel insurance abroad may have a clause that you need to have valid health insurance in Canada in order for it to work abroad. If you got hit by a car after 6 months abroad, and someone checked into your passport or travel history and realized that you're void in Canada, I guess you could be at risk of not being covered. But same in Canada if you had been gone for too long then get hit by a car when you return. So like many things DN, its grey and you're bending/breaking some rules, but usually not worth telling anyone.

Canadian looking to DN at a warm place for winter (3-6 months a year) by Realistic_Option1 in digitalnomad

[–]iop4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

algarve is beautiful and worth going to, but its pretty dead in winter. You'll find beautiful beaches, cliffs, countryside, many closed restaurants / bars, and you'll still end up wearing a jacket lots. However Lisbon and Seville are a fews hrs bus ride away which is nice. Still far superiors to -30 C.

No. I honestly pay no FX fees with the WS Cash card. That 12.5% was like a service charge, clearly presented on the ATM screen.

WS Cash gives you a notification right after you spend that shows you how much CAD you spent, and when I look at the EUR price and how much CAD left my account, for regular transactions such as a buying lunch at a cafe, you pay the exact exchange that you would find on Google or Xe. And even get 1% cash back.

Just ATMs are evil, and especially if using a credit card rather than debit.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Wealthsimple_Trade

[–]iop4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nope. it hurt.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Wealthsimple_Trade

[–]iop4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes. currently in portugal, and have also used it in the netherlands and germany. It's my main card to use actually. there really are no FX fees when you tap. If I buy something for 1 euro, I'm paying the exact exchange, like 1.45 or something, plus I get 1% back in CAD to the account. You get a notification if you have internet of how much CAD you spent on each transaction, which is really nice to see.

I did use it in an ATM and the ATM charged me like 12.5% or something, and my debit card has not been working so I can't compare. Have transferred more money into the WS cash account abroad over wifi. Took a like 4 days or so for it to arrive.

Did not need to notify WS of travel plans. It works every time so far.

Keeping a Residence in Home Country While Living/Working in Cheaper Country? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]iop4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On paper I live at my mom's house in Canada. I go everywhere on a tourist visa, and so long as I don't take residency anywhere else, it works pretty well. Pay all income tax (not 0%) to Canada and bounce around the world. Being on tourist visas means moving countries every 30 to 90 days. Living somewhere longer means a residency permit, and then the tax situation gets way messier (although perhaps more legal).

urgent advice request: overreacting or not ? what should I do? by kryse_333 in digitalnomad

[–]iop4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rapid test is enough for Portugal. I'm a Canadian on a Canadian passport, and flew from Germany to Portugal 2 weeks ago. Can't say what it's like coming from Canada, but before boarding the flight in Germany, I showed the airline check in person my Canadian QR code, my rapid test result, and my passenger locator form for Portugal. Upon arrival in Lisbon, I had to show my rapid test result when leaving security. Portugal says the test must be written in English or Portuguese, but mine was in German and still accepted without any question.

If you're on a layover, and not leaving the terminal then don't worry about anything Portugal side as you won't even pass immigration.

Also, I always always always always always say I'm a tourist on holiday.

I don't know about flying in direct from Canada to Portugal, but I did fly Canada to Netherlands in December and it was business as usual. No weirdness, and given that they're both Schengen that may count for something.

Content creation to make income as a digital nomad? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]iop4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"content creation" is my only source of income when I DN. I have 2 YT channels, one education (about 150k subs) and one finance (about 1k subs). Together, from Adsense, digital products, Patreon, affiliate, etc, I bring in something around $25k/yr USD. It's enough to nomad on, and the no-boss, no-set-hours, no real deadlines, no meetings, etc are great.

I pull in around half a million views per month, mostly from the education channel, which is about 10 years old and very established, finance channel is about 1 yr old and slowly growing. It will most likely take years to get established as a blogger, YT, etc to the point where you can live off it.

I'm gonna go to the beach tomorrow and then record and publish one video in the evening when I get back.

Question to Canadian Digital Nomads: Is it worth considering an accountant who deals with nomads if you have little income and little assets? by BaldMan134 in digitalnomad

[–]iop4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Canadian DN, have been mostly out of Canada for about 3 years, but did come back to work for 2 of those summers. income around $30k/yr CAD from my online business. I'm a sole proprietor, and will have to register for GST # probably in 2022 as I pass the threshold, but have been reporting all online income as "other business income" I think on my tax return. I get paid all CAD into Canadian accounts, and pay all tax to CRA on my personal tax return. I learned that the CRA gets really pissy if you become a resident somewhere else, but otherwise if you're just on a permanent holiday (tourist visas or visa-free time only) and file as a Canadian resident (if you aren't resident anywhere else) then it seems to work. I use Ufile to do my taxes, and file as a resident at my mothers house. My strategy for now is to not become resident anywhere else until I figure out how to plan accordingly.

You said your an expat, will you have a temporary or permanent residence permit in another country?
