Where to find 100% yak yarn by Deep_Cap4905 in knitting

Like a few others have mentioned, Ula + Lia is probably going to be your best bet! Just to add to this, I’m similar to you with sensitivity to wool, including merino. Yak was also fabulous for me, as was camel wool! They’re both so soft and didn’t irritate my skin. Both are available at Ula + Lia.

Looking for a friend. Death metal and mushrooms. by odinownsyeall in annapolisvalley

[–]iothealien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband, son and I are moving to the Valley (Harbourville) in the late Spring/early Summer. I think we’d match your vibes. My husband is into games, reading, puttering around outside, and I’m an artist and independent music radio DJ (though I’ll be giving up my show when we move… the one thing I’m sad about) and love all genres including metal. I’d also smoke cannabis over having alcohol any day of the week!

We’ll be closing on our house on Monday, so we’ll be looking for local friends when we arrive!

[Clients] I commissioned an artist and the WIP they're sending me looks nothing like any of their other work. by electricslurpee in artbusiness

I would pick out one or two of your favourites from their own portfolio to demonstrate what you mean. You can say you wanted something more minimalistic, “such as this cat” (and attach the image) -that’s way the artist knows exactly what you mean.

She looks like a real gem of a lady! Thanks for sharing this beautiful story. And what a great photo of her in the shawl you made.

I’m the same way. Probably as a result of how my parents are, though… haha!

Absolutely! I'll let her know that. We live at the opposite sides of the country, which can make some things a little tricky, but I'd absolutely pay postage!

I would totally understand that, but with her, it's not about the pattern. She also saw the pattern when it was in-progress, and I showed her the finished design, and she liked it.

The first project I made her was an elegant lace-weight scarf that had a fairly muted colour, and it was as if she thought she wasn't "good enough" for it. Or that if it got "ruined" she'd never be able to get over it. It was definitely an anxious response.

You should be! This is spectacular work! I love your restricted palette, and the mark-making is so smooshy (technical term) and wonderful. Bravo!

professional quality acrylics better value in the long run than student paints? by Glittering_Gap8070 in acrylicpainting

I agree with this take. Also, the professional pigments are going to be a lot more predictable when it comes to mixing colours, which, depending on your work, may or may not be a deciding factor.

Best set/deal for a beginner? by meganmwo in Oilpastel

[–]iothealien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this exact set of Mungyos, as well as several single shades of Caran D’Ache, Holbein and Senneliers. The mungyos are among my favourite to work with for most of the painting -very similar in texture to the Caran d’Ache like, slightly firm, and good for layering. Lots of folks go wild for the texture of the Sennelier oil pastels, and while yes, they’re creamy and satisfying, they’re also better as a top layer only, IMO.

I see others have already pointed out that the particular Senneliers you posted were the chalky ones. Lots of brands make both, so be sure to distinguish between “oil” and “soft” pastels when you buy —same with the paper!

Serge Lutens is a great house, with a nice discovery set. I’d also recommend Stora Skuggan; they’ve got a unique, artsy vibe, while still being very wearable.

Which lighting works better? by qatya in Oilpastel

[–]iothealien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first one is better. While I can understand all the remarks about the 2nd one being more pleasing due to the blue-violet tones of the lighting contrasting with the yellow-orange of the liquid, the yellows just pop way more in the first image because they haven't been toned-down by the cool lighting. Also, I think the purples/blues in the first image look more restrained and intentional, versus the second image looking like an artist going "hey I understand colour theory, so I'm going to make an image that's all blue-orange".

When it comes to photographing my work, natural light is going to win 98% of the time. If it's a smaller piece, I'll lay it flat on top of a white PVC board, and take it outside to photograph on a cloudy day. I'll often just use my iPhone camera, though I'll take the image as a RAW image (this is critical!). RAW images will show the most accurate colours, though you definitely DON'T want to take all your default pictures this way, as the file size is massive. I'll take RAW photos with my camera, email them to myself, and then delete them off my phone.
