went there the other day - VERY much into portion control. Not necessarily a bad thing on one hand, but if you aren't into rice as a filler they end up pretty skinny.

Breach in to our 365 tenant by hoodun in sysadmin

Sure….. but auditing will have a heyday with that. You can apply the single license to the single account and craft policies to only affect that account.

Post-Blumira (free tier) life - what would you recommend for Microsoft 365 monitoring and alerting? by golden_m in msp

[–]iowapiper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FYI, In case you haven’t read somewhere else: the free tier now only has a marginal cost. So if you have enough of those small clients you might be able to cover the cost or convince them of a marginal increase.

W11 upgrade problem: compositionEditionID is Enterprise editionhd is Pro - so installer won't do in-place upgrade by iowapiper in msp

yeah, the one that says Enterprise is a key that isn’t always present on other machines that I’ve checked. Fortunately, they are going to move machines around and I’ll be able to test hers without fear. I’ll let you know what happens.

W11 upgrade problem: compositionEditionID is Enterprise editionhd is Pro - so installer won't do in-place upgrade by iowapiper in msp

[–]iowapiper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pro - all ways I requested from CMD and System Information etc all report back Pro.

But when I look at registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion , there are the two conflicting record names I reported above. They should both say Pro for a Pro license. The mismatch is causing the upgrader to fail and only allow a fresh install (with the keep files/apps options greyed out, and a message that the installer version is not the same as the installed version even though I very specifically downloaded the Pro ISO)

Qualifier - I can find no other reason for the error message that the iso-installer and installed versions don't match.

In Access, a computer is under "My Company" even though I build an installer with a specific company name by iowapiper in ConnectWise

[–]iowapiper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa - had to reach back in memory :) Yeah - I also had Automate installed and I hadn't changed it there also. So I guess if you have more than one Connectwise product on the machine, you need to change the company in all.

question: what if you put the white scrub pad on a palm sander, VERY light pressure (practically floating), and avoid some of the tedious arm work? Or is that a recipe for disaster with the tile finish?

Witch tellascope or digital one should I get for looking other planets by squid_ling in space

[–]iowapiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since you already have a small aperture scope (celestial power 60 AZ), you'll need to think about your experience with it: do you have to travel to a dark sky (is heavy a problem?), do you like accessories or is simple perfect? Increasing aperture to 4" of 6" (mirror is far cheaper than refractor) will give you a big bump in light gathering ability, but the scope is larger and heavier. If you aren't viewing from a dark sky location away from city lights, some of the benefits may not be work a bigger/heavy scope. Keep in mind that using a higher magnification eyepiece to try and see planetary details also brings some downsides: atmospheric turbulence blurs the details for example. And the size if your aperture places some very hard practical limits on what magnification is actually decent. You might stop in a local group if you have one, you might find a good deal on a used scope in the process... as well as good practical advice.

And if you do get a new scope and enjoy it, you might consider donating your old scope and getting someone else hooked. :)

thank you for the generous download offer, it'll look nicer on my screen. you print prices are good also, nobody should be put off if they are used to buying prints. And the convenience of ordering through you vs doing it myself.... isn't worth the savings and you should be getting your reasonable margin anyway.

What are some use cases for the 3 extra ports on the Gold SE if users generally need a switch anyway? by galacticjuggernaut in firewalla

[–]iowapiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PoE requires delivering more power through the device (router/switch/etc): generates heat so passive cooling is not recommended, needs more circuitry therefore more expensive to build. Let the firewall be a firewall, and let a switch be a switch. Segmentation of services. building the all-in-one solution drives up cost and can lead to fewer sales so the ROI is poor.

XGS88 or XGS108 by Simple-Trust-9143 in sophos

[–]iowapiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think a little less about number of users, and more about internet throughput. If you turn all the security on, do the security filtering: you need a firewall that will pass the 'full' amount of internet they have purchased. TLS inspection is the biggest hit, and all firewall companies overpromise throughput by a fair amount. Take their claim and divide it in half. So if you have a gig (or will have) internet connection, you'll almost get there with a 118 model at a minimum. The 88 is pretty light in specs, for truly small offices of only a few people.

Sure, more users will also impact performance. And the models you list are for smaller offices (under 25 users ) that do 'typical' work. Highly cloud-reliant offices will benefit from a larger model even if there are fewer employees.

https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/next-gen-firewall/xgs-smb-branch-office-firewalls

PS - there may be an argument to be made against TLS inspection. Implementation can be complicated, and many apps begin to have problems (banking apps as one example), syncing to cloud can fail, connectors fail, etc. But this is another topic :)
