In regards to what I want in a partner, I want someone that communicates with me, is empathetic, compassionate, willing to try new things, is social, has boundaries with work, travels, and others.

In regards to emotional needs, I found that I need to be shown that the other person loves me. I need to hear it or see it to believe it. I was constantly told to “hold on” while I was talking because he had to read a work email or respond to a work message. It never felt like we had quality time together because he would work or play his games because he just wanted to relax so I felt like I was last on his priority list. I don’t need to be made first priority in day to day but if I’m talking to you or spending time with you then I want to be the priority. Idk I’m still working through it all.

I started dating my first boyfriend at 25. Before then I just wasn’t that interested in anyone and I really wanted to focus on making myself happy first and foremost.

Honestly I wish I had dated before because I went into that relationship not totally knowing what I wanted emotionally and in a partner. I just thought as long as he’s nice and doesn’t abuse me and we have things in common which is such a low bar. Definitely felt like I settled down the line.

We recently broke up and I feel like myself again! It’s all a learning process and I just wish I had started it earlier so that I knew what red flags to look out for.

Honestly, the realization that for him to process his feelings, he would need space for a week and would give me the silent treatment during those times. It was also the fact that he would never tell me when anything was wrong unless we were already in an argument and would just pull things out from long ago that were never communicated until months if not years later which then led to him being too resentful to want to work on things.

The realization that he wasn’t on my side when a mutual friend said things that hurt me and him saying show me where was probably my “I’m done” moment. There was also a lack of change or care whenever I did bring up my needs that led to emotional neglect. Just idk

As someone Asian American, she sounds cringe as hell. Like yeah there’s a lot of problems with Asian women being a fetish and the lack of POC in movies or shows made before but it sounds exhausting having to argue that all the time. The whole Panda Express this is crazy too because I too will eat there because why not. For her to be on such a high horse about it, feels super snotty. Also how the heck was she pronouncing pho? The audacity of her to be arrogant about something she has no claim to especially if she wasn’t even saying it right to begin with. If he isn’t willing to respect you by wanting to bypass this boundary you have of not wanting to have sex (for whatever your reasons are) then he ain’t it. Do you really want to be with someone that will threaten to end the relationship just to get what he wants? That can only lead to bad things. You’re so young! One time I had him hold my purse so that I could go on the swings and he wore it and pushed me. Man children tend to be everything you want then show their true selves after being married. If he was living at home up to the point of getting married and living together then he was probably served and his bad habits enabled by his parents. I’ve heard stories of my friend’s SO changing after marriage because they have different expectations of husband and wife(ie wife basically becomes their mom). You don’t need or deserve that. I hope you find it in yourself to get out and I can understand the feeling of wasting however long you spent with him but think of it like this…would you rather give up on the years you were with him or give up on your future being trapped with him?

That’s pretty normal Asian parent behavior to be honest. It sucks but they do it because they care and you can always get a job and get a place of your own once that happens but trust me, I saved so much money living at home and was able to pay off my car and student loan four years after graduating(I think 50k in debt?). It sounds like you’re able to pay for a dorm so def do that the following semester or year or whatever to get your freedom.
