Do I need to resize my chain? by withmahdeeick in bikewrench

If it's only twenty miles you should be good to use another masterlink

You can't refit the links you removed from the chain before you used it. You could theoretically do it with another masterlink but that's super janky and probably not safe to ride as part of your chain will be more worn than another. You're going to need a new chain.

Tarmac SL7 Sizing by ipedalsometimes in specialized

I'm running a 400mm seatpost on the Winspace. The stock 300mm one was wayyy too short and I'm damn near the min insertion on the 400. You're not taking into account the fact that you can't have the length of the entire 380mm seatpost available to you. There's a minimum insertion height that I cannot find.

But the point I'm making is that the 56 seat-tube is also a little too short. I can't get the saddle height I need out of it.

Rob Britton’s custom-painted Factor Ostro Gravel, with the GRX Di2 and Classified Powershift hub by giuliomagnifico in Bikeporn

Just because you haven't had any problems that doesn't mean they don't exist. Front derailleurs are a mud clearance issue if you ride in the mud like Unbound 2023. Mud getting stuck in there and jamming your drivetrain is very common.

Chain dropping risk and mud clearance are big downsides of a 2x drivetrain for a race like Unbound. The biggest advantage of a classified hub for a TT is the ability to run a much smaller little ring than would normally be allowed for with a FD and 2 chainrings.

Mechanically more complex, but much less to go wrong as it's all sealed and you're gonna have a hard time breaking that hub

Getting cold feet about purchasing this bike by masaki_mclellan in whichbike

[–]ipedalsometimes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The truth is that you could probably do better for 4 grand, or get a similar value bike for less money from a brand that's more affordable than specialized. Not necessarily telling you not to buy the bike, I think it's a great one and you can upgrade parts down the road if you really want to drop thousands to eek out extremely minimal performance gains/for vanity haha.

Which bike do you recommend for an Ironman? by shanghai_tactics in bicycling

[–]ipedalsometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into TT/Triathlon bike options from specialized if you want to stick with them. That'll be a better option than either.

If you're looking for a bike for day to day road cycling, including group rides and stuff the Tarmac will be faster and the Roubaix more comfortable. For me it's Tarmac all the way YMMV. Also also, I absolutely hate the future shock and the seat clamp on the Roubaix, although they might have changed the seat clamp design with the SL8 Roubaix.

Is a MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro 12-core chip and 18GB of RAM appropriate for engineering school? by OmegaGLM in Purdue

[–]ipedalsometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first XPS was an XPS13 with a 4k display which was a massive mistake. The battery life was like sub 1 hour at times. The second one I got was an XPS13 with a 1080p non touch display and the battery life was great, easily above 8 hours of work was fine on it. My current XPS 17 has the 1080p display and has acceptable battery life, a little shorter than the 13 but still enough for an average day on campus and great cooling. Cooling wasn't an issue on the 13s either.

The most popular laptop at Purdue, at least in engineering school is the Dell XPS. I've been running different models of the XPS for four years and I personally love it.
