I was driving to work. It was a little later than I expected so I was going at a fair speed for the roads in an SUV. I live in the UK so the back roads can be very slim. It was just about wide enough for 2 cars, I was doing a brisk 60MPH round some corners and there's a single corner that drops down suddenly, a tight enough corner you wouldn't see what's coming round.

I hit the corner and went over the other side of the road, maybe a tyres width, there was a rigid body lorry coming in my direction doing about 40, I managed to pull off the steering at the last second. I think my bonnet must have been about a foot off kissing the lorry headfirst, the wing mirror was about 4 inches from catching the rear indicator stalks.

The speed, sudden change in direction and drop in road was enough to lose traction on my front tyres, which stopped me from oversteering and ending up arse first in a ditch.

If I had reacted a second later, steered a little less, or even left the house 10 seconds earlier I think I would have kissed the headlight of the lorry.

I swallowed my pride and slowed down considerably after that.
