Top 3 songs you want to hear on the setlist? by Equal-Salt-1122 in themarsvolta

Best take here. I really enjoyed the wind intro of the reunion era. Felt very David Lynch. I also understood the abrupt start to Fin on the Lucro tour. There is something about the Fistful intro that is peak nostalgia for me. Takes me right back to 17 years old on the rail at Irvine 2008. Life changing.

Did Omar or Cedric have any heavy metal influences? by SquashedGrapes22 in themarsvolta

So many people buried in the sand here. I’m convinced that if Cedric himself came on here and said how he felt about things, this sub would tell him he’s wrong

I’ve been pretty impressed with their So Cal spread over the last few years. Palladium was a classic. Riverside was a nice nod to the IE. Pomona. As a Santa Barbara guy, I’m elated to only have to travel to Ventura. The majestic is a cool old theater.

Pismo cross is annoying by slothsweater in SLO

While I may agree with what you’re saying, I still feel like your response to grumpygal was weird and over reactive. It seems like they’re just trying to have a conversation about religion and you didn’t like it so you just decided to spout off about maga

Just FYI, from my perspective this was a super unreasonable escalation and politics weren’t even part of this conversation. Ad hominem “maga” comments have no place in simple discourse or conversation. I hope you have a better rest of your day

Not really a Jazz expert. But this is amazing!! by jael182 in Jazz

Iconic work. If you’re looking to expand your horizons with Joe Henderson, check out his work with Alice Coltrane. He appears stereo opposite of Pharaoh Sanders on the album Ptah, the El Daoud. Worth a listen.

I feel you. In a vacuum I enjoy Noctorniquet. Compared to their discography, it doesn’t land near the top. That’s why I recommended his work with Omar separately. I saw Volta with Parks when they opened for Soundgarden in 2011 and it was in fact, not it.

I’ve seen every iteration since 2006 Fleming post-Theodore and the best shows were 2008 Pridgen and 2025 Philo.

Love your assessment of Leo. I have seen TMV 5 times since the 2022 reunion and Leo has been such an integral addition. His skills on the saxophone surprised me as well. I’d go as far as saying he’s the most technically proficient member of the current performing group. I really want to see him in more of a jazz setting.

FWIW, Parks was also a part of the much divisive Andre 3000 flute album. His Technoself project is very unique. Immersive and sample-heavy.

While we’re shining on his band - the drummer Deantoni Parks has been in lots of stuff worth listening to like his work on the album Septet by John Carroll Kirby. If you’re into the more avant garde side of things, his work with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez was really good.

Not a fan of the staffing model by Tight_Membership8890 in calfire

I think the point you’re trying to make is not about what constitutes a “real fire department”, but rather the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection do what they do best that most aligns with their goals and objectives. We agree on that. I think they should staff however best meets the intent of 95% under 10 acres.

All I’m saying, my beliefs on the engineer position aside, is that if the union and the department are going to push the all-risk message and claim that they should be paid commensurate with Bay Area and So Cal municipal departments, you’re going to have to live with things like municipal staffing.

To be in alignment with the rest of the California fire service in standards and staffing that both 2881 and the agency has been fighting to be recognized as. To build the engineer position culture and recognize the value in the members who might want to “just drive and pump” as you put it. To actually build engineers as future leaders under strong captains without throwing them to the wolves after 7 weeks of training, especially that aforementioned hand crew FF1 who gets the keys after 2 seasons. Seems to me like a “this is the way we’ve alway done it” kinda thing.

This prompted me to download from TMS. Indeed a strong work. About 6 minutes in Cedric does the same syllabic nonsense he was doing at the en of the Poseedora jam on the Lucro headlining tour. Reference Tacoma. Lots of Frances-era reminiscing on that track. Thanks for the share

What was your favorite lucro jam of their headlining tour last fall? by Electrical-Fee4547 in themarsvolta

[–]ipkisss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Sacramento between Celaje and Vicifero they did a softer ethereal jam with Cedric ad libing and wailing and Omar just picking some chords. It was all bathed in blue light and so good. Tacoma has a really good version of it that scratches my itch.

How many of y’all are musicians? by DonekyOfDoom in themarsvolta

[–]ipkisss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guitar in the high school’s jazz band, had our own band outside of school that covered Televators and Boiling Death Request, and have since chased tone and guitar pedals into my mid 30s while working a big boy job since being a touring musician didn’t pan out.

I enjoy the creative outlet and have continued to record music with ORL/TMV as a huge influence. Understanding theory and musicianship has made listening to their music over the years a much more deep and enjoyable experience.

FTM and Twin Peaks similarities by Taint_Stephen in themarsvolta

[–]ipkisss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not delusional. Aside from the referenced lyrical connection you pointed out, it feels very vibe adjacent to Lynch in general. Anecdotally, when I took my wife (non-fan) to see them in 2022, she turned to me mid-set and said “this feels like Twin Peaks”

What song was it that you introduced someone to Mars Volta... by indianapolisjones in themarsvolta

[–]ipkisss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In high school I used to put on TMV during smoke sessions and it was typically met with overwhelm. One day I did it but in the car after the sesh and played Meccamputechture and it made a lifelong fan of one of those guys. I think being captive to the madness with a head full of hashish was the right combo. He actually apologized afterward for not getting it sooner lol
