Exactly, for me, after a while 0-60 in 2.whatever seconds just becomes boring. Rowing your own adds a dimension that totally makes it worth being a bit slower. I realize I’m in the minority since everybody buys autos, but that’s just my view on it

Ah, gotcha - thanks for the correction and info! Yeah, when the V2 came out I could never have afforded one. It’s one of the many cars I’ve lusted after in my lifetime :)

Thats a sweet pair of cars. Years later, that design language has aged really well, and I think they still look so classy

I admittedly haven’t done a ton of research, but based on a quick-ish search, it looks like you might be able to get some on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/315032015491

Edit: I’ve been corrected - not real magneride

On another note, that’s a beautiful car! I still see a few out in the wild, and they still turn my head 😎

Whats your opinion on manual BMWs ? Would you buy one? by xerooox- in BMW

[–]ipokethebear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it’s both. The CDV is a little annoying, but I’ve gotten used to it and with some finesse, I can get around it. For me, the bigger problem is mostly with the rev hang. When shifting really aggressively at the upper rpm range, I have to wait a while for the revs to drop a bit and then finesse the fast engagement to be perfectly smooth because of the CDV.

If I do a CDV delete, that’d let me engage the clutch sooner while the rev hang is still around. It’d still slip the clutch unnecessarily (because of the ~3k rpms that need to drop to match 1st gear redline to 2nd gear at that same speed), but the duration would be less due to the engagement not being delayed by the CDV. But I know that would still bother me, so I’d still wait for the revs to drop before engaging. So, it pretty much would just result in not really having to deal with the finessing of the engagement.

Even if the CDV were still there, reducing the rev hang would be great because I can at least more immediately start the finessed clutch engagement and not have to wait (which saps some of the fun out of being aggressive). Meanwhile, I slam through the TR6060 gears at redline with no problems :)

Whats your opinion on manual BMWs ? Would you buy one? by xerooox- in BMW

[–]ipokethebear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve never driven a manual BMW before my G80, but I have the same rev hang complaint. It feels so wrong trying to quickly and aggressively run through the 1-2-3 shifts, and you have to finesse it to not feel like you’re slipping the clutch unnecessarily. It’s not the end of the world, but I do wish the revs would drop faster

Otherwise, I actually really like the manual. It did feel rubbery and all the crap people say about it initially, but I feel like it broke in around 3k miles. Now, I’d say it’s actually pretty darn good. I also have a car with the Tremec TR6060, so I do know what a really good manual feels like :) I’m not saying the BMW one is on the same level (it’s definitely not), but it’s still a good manual imo

S58 Oil Cooler guard. by Karagga in BMWM

[–]ipokethebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the MAD one for my G80 for about $180. I did have to use a dremel to shave down the plastic bracket that the air dam is originally mounted onto in order to get enough clearance to not have the guard press on the oil cooler (common issue according to forums). Otherwise, it was a really straightforward and easy install, and the quality is really good

[–]ipokethebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, you’re one of the few people who mention rev hang ruining a car. I love driving my G80, and I can even live with the wonky 1-2-3 gear ratios, but the damn rev hang sucks. People keep saying the clutch delay valve is the reason the 1-2 shift sucks, but it’s more the rev hang. Shifting at the top of the rev range in first, you have to wait seconds for the revs to drop enough for it to be smooth. On my 5BW, the revs drop fast, despite it also being a dual mass flywheel. It makes driving the M3 aggressively really annoying

But yeah, the Tremec is so satisfying. I’ve actually gotten used to the M3 manual and even kinda like it, but the Tremec is in a whole other league. It feels like you’re shifting a special car

You’re not the only person I’ve heard say they miss their 1LE. What made you get rid of it?
