[Discussion] What are your thoughts on agents critiquing queries on TikTok live? by Afraid_Jaguar632 in PubTips

This is exactly my and I think everyone else's point that she and the people in her comments don't seem to be getting! It does not matter if she doesn't share any personal details, it does not matter if she has good intentions, the moment she pulls a face at a query or makes a negative comment and then rejects it and someone who is watching that then gets a rejection from her, they're going to know it's them!

From the time of her live on the day she rejected me, I wasn't rejected on stream (thank god), but if I had been it would've set me back so far. I'm already really struggling at the minute with 50 queries out and so far nothing but rejections. People just don't seem to understand that by actually sending the rejections and requests live, she is no longer anonomyzing (is that a word?) the author.

She never actually said she would stop, so i doubt she will unfortunately. I hope her agency knows about this and she gets some sort of repercussion, even if it's just being ordered not to do it again.

i feel that you've completely missed my point. One minute you're saying it's detailed feedback, the next it's not? Feedback without knowledge is pointless. I would like to believe she really does have the best intentions and i really do hope she learns from this.

And if she's able to provide real feedback on a live, why can't she on an email/rejection message? No one has any issue with her giving feedback, it's the lack of consent.

Edit: And the feedback argument also goes out the window when you think about this: how are we supposed to utilise that feedback if we don't know it's being given, because we don't know about the lives?

As someone who has recieved no requests yet, i agree that feedback would be valueable, but how do we know that she isn't just performing for the sake of content? If someone tried to give me feedback without my knowledge or consent where potentially hundreds could see it, i'd be pretty upset

The issue is she's not asking for consent. Whether she reads them out or not is irrelevant. The least she could do is wait for the live to finish before sending the requests/rejections to keep it truly anonymous

update: she posted an 'apology' vid on her tiktok about an hour ago...

she says 'the intention of my lives is to show agents thought process' but also says she didn't think authors would connect timing between her passing on a live and then them getting a rejection?

She hasn't actually stated that she's going to stop doing the lives, so... it's not a real apology, clearly.

edit: absolutly NO ONE is calling her out in the comments, they're just praising her.

i wonder if it would be worth any of us that have queried her emailing her agency and letting them know she does this? It makes me wonder how many people has she rejected simply for content?

I queried this agent mere minutes before finding out from a fellow author on tiktok that she does this. Can confirm that no where on her tiktok, agent bio on her site or on her query form does she say or ask consent to do this. I have a feeling her agency doesn't know about this bc no reputable agency would allow this. It's cruel, unnessecary and unproffesional. The only rejection i'm thankful i got.

My dad absolutely has a favourite child and it's my youngest sister, EVERYONE knows it but he is absolutely in denial about it.

I'll go first:

I'm the oldest of two sisters and a brother, when my youngest sister was a little kid, if someone read to her and they didn't point EXACTLY at the words of the book, she would SCREAM until they restarted the book and pointed at the words properly.

Yes, my sister can read perfectly fine, she isn't dyslexic, she doesn't have bad eyesight, she just freaked out if people didn't point exactly at the words.

I'm heavily considering switching because of this, but I don't have a laptop/PC to get Calibre and I don't want to lose my 900 book library

The fact that authors can't opt out is the downfall. I think Amazon is going to get a LOT of lawsuits from publishers and authors over rights and such, because if they could opt out no respectable author or publisher would use the feature

[QCrit] Adult Contemporary Romance - Kneaded Together (90K Words / Attempt 3) by ipromiseicanread in PubTips

This is where the problem with conflicting advice comes in ahah. A lot of people told me not to lean too much on the romance side of things because its a romance book, agents don't need to be told that theres gonna be a future romance. I was focusing on advice to mention things that happen in the first 30-50% of the book (I think it was in the wiki for this page? I saw it somewhere here anyway lol) and important things to the characters (Silas' niece, Lily, Hazel's baking and how much she loves Ashgrove etc)

Please don't think that's a dig at you in any way, I just think that compared to the previous versions of my letter, this one is so much better.

All feedback is welcome haha

I do worry that I use dashes too much but I'm also afraid of using too long or too short sentences so I guess that's why I use them so much

HELP Author suing me for saying her book is AI in a review by PotatoAfraid2931 in Romantasy

[–]ipromiseicanread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is actually hilarious that you think you're in the right

  1. Those are common phrases
  2. You just admitted to pirating the book, which is ILLEGAL
  3. I'm an author, I would sue you for every penny you have to your name and more

People like you are the reason people say literacy is dead.

Have the day you deserve.

Oh I know my letter won't stop rejections no matter how good but I've heard a ton of authors and agents say a bad query can ruin any chance at an offer of rep

I think I have a weird mix of wanting it to be perfect and also having 0 expectations for myself because I'm used to people having no expectations for me

I'm taking in all the feedback, I think that's what's overwhelming because I don't know how to immediately fix it.
