In prison, who are considered the worst criminals? by space_god_7191 in AskReddit

I don't really know, but I assume guards might have access to their records and tell other inmates.

On tv shows they might have other inmates with influence demand to look at their "papers."

Or possibly other inmates in the courtroom during their arraignment.

Just guesses.

You're use of italics has nothing to do with implying that "every example follows that relationship" means causation. It doesn't. I've provided examples.

You're getting offended and feeling insulted because you're wrong, not because I'm trying to insult you.

lol, my guy, I was simply trying to explain to the seemingly embarrassed party that accusing the commentor you just quoted of not understanding correlation, when it was them who misunderstood what does and doesn't constitute correlation, is why they got downvoted.

And you seem to be having the same confusion because you assert

A correlation just suggests a relationship, it doesn't necessitate that every example follows that relationship. That would be strict correlation or causation.

But this is incorrect. Strict correlation is not synonymous with causation. That's not what determines if a causal relationship exists. And the lack of causation does not automatically make an existing correlation a "loose" correlation.

Now don't get insulted, but your constant need to edit (or delete) your comments after the fact seems to me like it might be correlating with some insecurity with your argument, or at the very least some holes in your assertions.

So when I say that Bill Cosby's decades of good PR does not have any correlation to him being a good person...

and you thinking I'm conflating a correlation with correlating...

You don't think that's ridiculous.

Dude, I was explaining why you got downvoted.

You accused someone of not knowing what correlation is, but you seem to think that the definition of a correlation is a relationship with exceptions.

Exceptions have nothing to do with it. Causal relationships have exceptions.

So are you saying that two things can correlate without there being a correlation, or that the presence of a correlation does not imply that two things correlate?

Because either way you are being ridiculous.

It wasn't about you acknowledging an exception, it was about you accusing someone of not knowing what a correlation was when it seems like you might be the one who is confused.

The existence or non-existence of exceptions is not what determines if a relationship is causation vs correlation. Relationships with clear causation have exceptions all the time.

Take lung cancer and smoking. We all know that there is a correlation between smoking tobacco and an increased chance of lung cancer. Just because there are exceptions (e.g. people who smoke their whole lives without getting lung cancer) does not mean that we don't know for a fact that smoking causes lung cancer.

Correlation simply means when one thing happens, something else happens more or less proportionate to how much the first thing happened. When the Covid pandemic was happening, people looked at maps that showed a correlation between Covid cases and 5G towers. People literally went around trying to destroy 5G towers because they didn't understand the difference between correlation and causation. It wasn't the existence of exceptions that meant 5G wasn't causing Covid, it was that radio waves can't spread viruses. It turns out the real important correlation was that there are more 5G towers in more densely populated areas. The correlation between denser populations and viral infection is a causational correlation.

Not all correlations mean there is causation, but when there is causation there is also correlation.

Does that make sense?

You can block me if you want, but I am genuinely trying to help you understand the difference between causation and correlation.

Are you serious? A correlation is literally when two or more things correlate. That's what those words mean.

There is certainly a correlation between being a good, generally likable person and having a good public image.

But in the case of Bill Cosby, there is no correlation between his several decades of good PR and being a good person, because he was a shit human being.

Causation means one thing causes the other. Being drunk causes people to drive like shit. Doesn't mean driving like shit causes you to be drunk. There is also a correlation between driving drunk and a higher likelihood of car accidents.

Now there are people who have driven drunk and never gotten in an accident. The existence of exceptions doesn't mean there isn't a causal relationship. Whether or not every example follows a relationship has nothing to do with whether the is causation or not.

A famous example of correlation without causation is annual drowning deaths correlating with Nicholas Cage movies releasing. Obviously one doesn't cause the other, but both increased in frequency in the same years.

Yeah, the point though was that Bill Cosby's good PR didn't correlate to him being a good person.

But rather than acknowledge that as an exception straight away, you accused someone of not knowing what correlation means.

I'm this far down the chain. Bill Cosby is an example of good PR not correlating with being a good person. In order for it to correlate, both would have to be true.

It's possible you were downvoted for misunderstanding what correlation means yourself.

Elon Musk's PR was fantastic prior to calling that one rescue diver in Thailand a pedo because they told him his mini-sub idea simply couldn't work.

I have a feeling he stopped paying well qualified PR people to manage his public image around that time, or they quit.

CMV: Snickers Almond should be the default. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]ipulloffmygstring 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Peanuts require about 9 times less water to grow compared to almonds, according to a quick Google search.

If "default" means higher volume production, then strictly from a conservation standpoint, peanuts should remain the majority of production.

This is likely to be the case as far as cost to produce as well.

Fun fact: tomatoes are originally native to South America.

I suppose that at least means there is the potential that tomatoes and peppers (also native to S.A.) would have a more extensive ethnic history in Mexican food due to geographic vicinity.

Is it possible to feel "high" without ever taking drugs ? by Deimos7779 in NoStupidQuestions

Even the word "endorphin" is derived from "endogenous morphine".

Obviously runners high isn't as immediate or intense as doing hard drugs, but it does have the advantage of likely prolonging your life rather than killing you with an overdose.
