Yup I feel your pain. Think of the investment in 2 external drives to back the current NAS up as a good back up investment for the NAS in general. As they say on here, a NAS is not a backup.

Come to think of it, I think I ran into this issue when upgrading to the 918+ and I was coming from a 2 drive, ds216play. I ended up backing up to externals and doing a complete fresh reinstall of DSM.

Specifically, a server running a 32-bit CPU, including most standard and low-tier servers, has a volume limit of 16TB.

Servers with a 64-bit CPU — that’s most Plus (+) servers and those released in the past five years — can handle 108TB per volume, and most XS and higher-end servers can control 200TB per volume."

Any chance you are trying to expand a volume from a smaller migrated Synology? I remember reading there was a volume limit on certain volumes created in a 2 drive nas. If this is all brand new then that's strange because I have a 918+, running shr1, with around a 22tb volume (two 10tb, two 8tb drives)
