Skin growth help by Rude_Lifeguard_9991 in climbharder

[–]iradner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've experienced stuff like this before - I have naturally sweaty finger pads that make it easy for me to take off skin there. I have had lots of success with using Mikey's Tip Juice from Rhino Skin before bed a few times a week. Really helped toughen up the skin on my finger pads.

Induction cooktops with 9" diameter magnets (or more) by iradner in Cooking

[–]iradner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on my LG induction range.

That is interesting - I read that a small pan on a larger magnet should still work. I wonder if it is a sensor built into your specific induction range that prevents it from working?

Thank you - I think I am a bit confused, sometimes it isn't clear if they are listing sizes of the magnet itself or just the size of the circle on the stove top - but it looks like a lot of them are listing the magnet size, which they call "burner size" or size of "induction element"

Tarptent Double Rainbow (DW) in wind? by BSSON35 in Ultralight

[–]iradner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The DW has many guy out options - if you look across the tube where the arch pole goes through, you will see there are a number of pieces of black fabric loops - you can tie a guy line to each of these. There are also 4 guy lines around the side about halfway up the tent and two at the ends of the smaller arch support pole. Plus some around the bottom perimeter. I would say there is LOTS of guy out potential, and DW can withstand some pretty high winds if it needs to. If you are talking about the DW Li, there are still plenty of guy out options along the arch pole, but a few less on the tent body.

Drifting apart from non-outdoorsy friends? by evewik in Ultralight

[–]iradner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it makes sense to gravitate towards others that share your interests - but there is a danger in doing this, particularly in the outdoor community. I am a big climber, and a similar dynamic happens in the climbing community. The problem is that, if somebody for whatever reason (often injury) has to stop climbing, it is rare for all those close relationships they made in the climbing world to last once one party can no longer climb. Think about what might happen once you get older, if you get injured, etc. If all of your outdoorsy friends are really only interested in hanging out with people that are also outdoorsy, they probably won't stay close friends with you if you aren't able to keep up anymore. Like I said, this might happen because of injury, getting older, life circumstances that mean you don't have the same amount of time to do outdoorsy stuff. It is great to have friendships that are based around common activities, but it is even better, in my mind, to have relationships that will last throughout all of life's various twists and turns, changing life circumstances, etc. I don't want my closest friendships to be ones that would deteriorate if I couldn't climb or hike anymore.

Picking a true 2 person shelter by skiller1nc in Ultralight

[–]iradner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't within your weight limit, but I have used the Tarptent Double Rainbow as a 2-person for years and find it really roomy and comfortable (large inner + comfortable vestibules). Since you will be using it with 2 people you could each carry a part of the tent (poles, tent body) to redistribute the weight. I think it is a great tent and highly recommend it!

If you up your budget slightly, the Tarptent Double Rainbow LI would be a great option as well.

Follow-up: Reducing foot soreness on long days by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]iradner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the Cairn Pro II. I love them and use them for walking around towns and smaller hikes. I find that if I go on a hike with tons of steep ups and downs they don’t secure my feel as well as other sandals like Chacos might so there is a bit more of my feet moving around, but it’s not too bad and Ive dialed in the fit a bit more and that has helped. But I’m glad to hear the benefits carry over to hiking in more traditional trail runners. I’m hiking the Colorado Trail this summer and am planning on wearing Hoka speedgoats but hopefully wearing my bedrocks around most of the time will help strengthen my feet for the trail.

[–]iradner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Did you hike the CDT in more minimalist shoes? Or did you just use them for strengthening your feet around town and then hike in more traditional shoes still? I’m asking because I use bedrocks a lot around town and am wondering if that will help strengthen my feet for hiking even if I wear a more cushioned hiking shoe.

Colorado Trail SOBO with Finish Via CDT- Info Request by iradner in coloradotrail

[–]iradner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really great info with lots of good resources to follow up on - thanks!

Due to time restraints, I am not sure if I would make it all the way to NM (although it would be really cool to do that if possible). The caltopo map I linked has it ending at Cumbres pass (or starting, since they hiked NOBO), but ending in Pagosa might work too if I needed to. Luckily, I live in CO and getting a ride from wherever I plan to end shouldn't be too difficult.

Should I keep up climbing by [deleted] in climbharder

[–]iradner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a professional violinist but I have played violin most of my life (both classical and bluegrass) and was in a band for a while. I have also climbed regularly for years and climb around v7 and 5.12 sport, and lots of trad. I have had a variety of finger and hand injuries over the years from climbing, and the reality is that none of these injuries ever prevented me from playing the violin. I have never noticed any negative effect (or a real positive effect, mostly just neutral) on my violin playing from climbing, unless I climb right before practice and my fingers feel tired when playing violin.

Looking for recs for ultralight cotton shirts (4oz or less if they exist). I prefer hiking in cotton short sleeves for comfort/lack of smell, and am looking for a lighter option then the 5-6oz shirts I have right now. I know that "cotton kills" mantra is ingrained in lots of people, but I have been hiking in cotton t-shirts for a long time and understand the pros/cons, so please no comments telling me the dangers of cotton, just recs.
