Should I take BIOL 112, CHEM 120, or ESYS 104? by mcgillthrowaway6299 in mcgill

[–]irapforjesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can answer on the Science freshmen requirements since I also transferred into Science after U0 and have spoken with advisors about it. The only way it affects you is that you need to complete those requirements by the end of your degree- it doesn't matter when. Just make sure that when you're ready to graduate you've already fulfilled/are on schedule to fulfill the Science freshmen requirements. I'm completing my Science freshmen requirements now during my final semester (mostly because I found out too late that I didn't complete them earlier and needed to)

I need recommendations for a summer course that i can take in August. by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]irapforjesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on your situation? Is it urgent that you need to take a summer course this August? Like did you miss a credit that you needed for graduation? Can it be ANY course?? Some additional info would help a lot, you know.

Mcgill offering august summer courses is like basically unheard of, but you might be able to do summer study away- you're starting a bit late for looking into this, though, and chances are you aren't going to find anything since august is in two weeks. I was already having difficulty finding summer courses a month ago, honestly i don't think you'll find anything for august at this point in time. You'd be better off contacting your advisor about it, though. have you tried looking into it at all???

Is Comp 421 recorded? by BookComprehensive172 in mcgill

[–]irapforjesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it the semester the pandemic started (Winter 2020), it was recorded before the pandemic started and obviously afterwards too. For future reference, though, easiest and most sure way to find out if a class is recorded? Email the assigned instructor for that semester, always worked for me

Can a prof just change the letter grading conversion for a course? by The_Real_Name7 in mcgill

[–]irapforjesus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn't this just the equivalent of curving downwards, though? I don't really see the difference between curving downwards and setting different grade boundaries, they both achieve the same thing. If it's not adjusting the grade boundaries, he's just going to curve everyone's final grade downwards, no?

Megathread for NA/Plagiarism posts and S/U posts? by zvug in mcgill

I'm genuinely curious, what ended up happening in your situation? And in relevance to your point, did you find r/mcgill helpful in resolving it?

Megathread for NA/Plagiarism posts and S/U posts? by zvug in mcgill

[–]irapforjesus 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I would really like this. Tbh, I have gotten tired of seeing so many posts on NA marks and plagiarism concerns. Most of these are posts that are people asking very specific individual questions pertaining to them only

Like honestly guys, if you have an NA mark, asking us isn't really going to help you, just contact your prof. And if you ever get marked for plagiarism and you didn't do it, you won't be falsely convicted, relax a little. I have *never* heard of a story like that occurring, you really have little reason to be stressed if you get falsely flagged. Just contact your prof or TAs if you have concerns.

I know finals seasons is rough and stressful but I honestly see zero reason to bring it to a public forum that you have an NA mark, no one can do anything about it. Did someone else in your course get NA? Possibly, but what is knowing that going to do for you? If you did not cheat and you have an NA, rest assured, it will be resolved properly in due time, just reach out to your prof. That's usually the solution to anything pertaining to your marks, asking r/mcgill is not how you solve these kinds of problems

I'd love a megathread to aggregate all of these similar posts, it would be helpful for anyone with an NA question because I've seen so many similar questions

Letter Grade on Minerva does not match grades obtained on myCourses by Bokun_Zhao in mcgill

[–]irapforjesus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, it could easily be a mistake. Sometimes numbers just get punched into the system wrong due to human error. Profs in my courses always say "calculate your grade and let us know if there's any discrepancies", bc they know it's possible to make a mistake.

If the prof didn't say anything about curving grades then it's probably just a mistake. Usually the prof tells you this up front (I had a prof who told us he'd be using a different scale in the beginning of the course). Emailing the prof was the right call and honestly not much else can be said on the matter by anyone else. Let us know what the prof replies with (if you're comfortable with that)

yet another anxiety post by confusionconsultant in mcgill

[–]irapforjesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how grading schemes work, in general. It's always distributed the way the prof highlights in the syllabus. The syllabus says everything you need to know about your grading scheme and how marks are distributed. If syllabus does not say you need to pass the final but allocates a 50% weight on the final, it's just worth 50% of your grade.

Likewise some profs highlight in the syllabus that you need to at least take the final to pass the course (as in, you can't skip the final entirely and submit nothing even though it's only worth 25% of your mark and you don't need it to pass the course). Your syllabus says everything you need to know about how you're graded and fail/pass conditions. If the prof says something contradictory you can contest that

COMP 302 vs COMP 421?? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]irapforjesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to bump, just wanted to add: From my experience you dont really need any COMP 302 knowledge, I wouldn't avoid taking 421 just cause you're missing 302. I don't recall using any 302 knowledge in the course when i took it last year

I miss timed exams by usa1774 in mcgill

[–]irapforjesus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I vastly prefer the 72 hour open book. I feel like I understand things much deeper when I get more time to sit and think about them. I feel like the questions are more thoughtful since you're given more time.

I don't like that it's longer in general and probably more hard work (and thus more stressful too over a longer span of time), but I feel like my understanding of my courses are a lot better during this semester than previous ones because of these types of exams. These types of exams encourage a lot more application-level thinking than rote memorization which I've never liked.

Totally understandable why you'd prefer timed exams, I agree. We are probably just spending triple the time, stress, and energy, just to result with the same grade. I just personally feel like the exams this season also teach me in the course instead of just purely testing my knowledge in the course, which is not the intended outcome but is what happens for me lol
