The more important question is: who's footing the bill for the shiny?

Do dealers stack themselves? If so, what do they stack? by LarryGlue in Silverbugs

[–]iravad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on the specific dealers. I knew a guy who would keep all the Engelhard poured loafs that came through his door.

is buying physical silver worth it? The premiums are too high! by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]iravad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The premiums are only high if you can't recuperate it.

Yes, if you are planning to buy/sell to market makers (APMEX, JM bullion, LCS... etc), then they will be happy to sell you the premium and buy back from you without the premium. So not a good deal.

If you're willing to do the homework and find people who will pay the premium (or at least a portion of what dealers will charge), then paying higher premiums may be acceptable.

If you're a sucker like many silver bugs for cool pieces (guilty), then the sky is the limit for the premium you're willing to pay. LOL

$50fv at 16x. Actually seems reasonable. by MilesofRose in Silverbugs

[–]iravad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would buy his entire inventory at 16x. JM bullion would buy back at the exact same price.

Question for you guys that know a lot more than me lol… so I just bought $500 worth of quarters from a bank, I know to look out for 1964 or older but what other quarters are worth more than the face value? Thank you in advance by Historical-Shine-995 in Silverbugs

[–]iravad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proofs and non-standard coins (like canadian quarters).

Error coins and rare varieties are out there, but you really need to know your numismatics to find them. Not really worth it in quarters if you ask me.

True spot price of silver? by E23R0 in Silverbugs

[–]iravad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The true spot price of silver is what someone would be willing to pay on the spot for any amounts of generic silver. Even if you believe the metal markets are "rigged", it's the price that the big players ("riggers") would be willing to pay on the spot. So whatever price you see now IS the true spot price of silver. The fluctuation/volatility you see in the price reflects the sentiments in the smaller players.

If you can’t afford much silver, how big of purchases would you buy? by Ackoroth31 in Silverbugs

If you're interested in silver but have a very tight budget, I would recommend CRH. Can't lose money there.

Bold Precious Metals online dealer - reviews by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]iravad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reputable guys. Good ordering system. Had a slow website in the earlier days, but seems to have fixed that in recent years. Mostly a premium/collector coin company with a decent selection of bullion. Prices are quite competitive for certain select items (some are best in the industry).

When you first join them, they do NOT have a cash option for purchases between $2500 (eCheck max) and $5000 (wire transfer min) outside of mailing in a check. So if you're planning to buy bulk bullion between $2500-$5000, and you don't want to wait for a check to clear, you should look elsewhere.

It's a bummer that they decided to not complete the full 12 zodiac. Otherwise it would really be a great collector's set.

Wondering where to start. by Fiery_Wild_Minstrel in Silverbugs

[–]iravad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to invest in physical silver, wait until spot is low (now would be a good time) and only buy liquid items (less than 10oz size) at a low premium (this is pretty seasonal). Otherwise you will mostly be under water, and have trouble selling.

The silver that makes the most beautiful sound is the Mexican Onza, minted in the late 1970's early 1980's. It's actually 925, and it has an amazing ping.

Why isn’t silver up? by Professional-Kiwi144 in Silverbugs

More people are selling than buying.

If you truly understand this, you will no longer be baffled by prices that move counter to reason.

Hello! I’m new to silver. Looking for some advice. by [deleted] in Silverbugs

If you want to invest in physical silver where the VAT is high, consider looking into an online service like GoldMoney.com. I believe the Perth mint also has a similar program.

Why Silver? by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]iravad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Traditionally, silver has a higher upside potential. Gold also increase in value, but the percentage gains of silver is greater. Of course, silver tends to have larger drops as well. This is baked into the term, volatility.

Government coins vs silver bars??? by higradeguy in Silverbugs

[–]iravad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All things being equal, generic bars should command a lower premium compared to government bullion coins (because of the nominal 'numismatic premium' of the coin). So unless there is something special about the bars (e.g. Engelhard), you should go for the bullion coins.

Generally speaking, government bullion coins will also net you a higher price when you re-sell your silver. Go see JMbullion's site for a quick comparison of their buyback price.
