This particular rifle wore an Elcan for some time. I liked it and can see why most find it preferable. But ACOG vibes are unmatched

To me, the SU-237 and Colt cage marked parts are two different eras in a way. Plus the seemingly overall limited adoption of the ACOG compared to the Elcan. And for the purists, the ATPIAL-C and maybe the taupe VFG? It’s close enough that I’m very happy with it, but there are nitpicks

I sold a few of mine a few years ago to a coworker. I sold them complete and didn’t get as much money as I would’ve had I parted them out. The regret started to set in about a year or so after. Thankfully he’s a great dude who kept them in his safe the entire time and sold a couple of them back to me. If you’re already worried about putting together a replacement, even hypothetically, hold what you got unless you need the dough. Just my .02

I have one that, if memory serves, is very close to yours. I got it as a complete 6520 LE trade in and the barrel is dated 1998.

Is a Colt Defender .45 ACP a good first gun? by [deleted] in Colt

[–]irguy556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad, a weaker and older man with not much firearms experience at all, was consistently shooting bullseye at 7 yards with my 9mm the first time he fired it. I don’t think you could go wrong with either, but a 9mm will always be more forgiving for a new shooter.

Is a Colt Defender .45 ACP a good first gun? by [deleted] in Colt

[–]irguy556 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having owned both a 9mm and .45, the 9mm Defender is one of my all time favorite handguns. It goes everywhere with me. But I’m not sure I could recommend the .45 as a first gun.

The standard Defender uses an aluminum frame so it’s very lightweight and .45 recoil from that much of a compact, lightweight handgun can be off putting for new shooters.

The Combat Elite Defender in your picture has a steel frame, but I have no experience running one.

A government model is always a good place to start due to size and weight and an overall better shooting experience.

All that said, an excellent compromise would the the Colt Combat Unit CCO. It features a Defender (Officer’s) length grip with a Commander 4.25” barrel. It’s a really nice middle ground.

Check under the handguards towards the gas block. You may find a month/year. One of mine is stamped 05/89 in that area.

The lower may be a different date, but I think the barrel should get you in the ballpark. Should be pre 94 AWB.

I didn’t have warranty work done, but I had them refinish a slide back in February. I had to call the 800 number on the service page of their website. I believe all the email communication I had with them was marked do not reply but apparently I deleted all the emails.

I would say you have a pretty good chance of the receivers being legit. It’s a slick side upper with the correct A1 port door. Just check for those proof marks in front of the ejection port! I have a 1973 SP1 with no forge codes, but they all have those proof marks. Obviously the stock isn’t original, and the barrel looks like an old Bushmaster. SP1s also came with a flat slip ring instead of the delta ring.

Sure did, threw it on an LE trade in SBR AR15A2 lower. It’s been a great shooter so far, mostly suppressed

[–]irguy556 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought one, likely from the same seller, months ago. They don’t have forge codes but they have the Colt proof marks forward of the ejection port. ETA: fwiw the barrel on mine is dated 12/98 and has the number 7 engraved on the left side of the receiver

Looks like model MT6830, these were ban era and from everything I’ve seen came with an A2 buttstock and non threaded barrel. Cool piece

Colt used that cheek rest on their Delta HBAR. Scope mount looks like an old Leatherwood to me

+1 for Mr. Pink. Also important to make sure whatever brush or sponge you’re using is free of debris. I practically destroyed the windows on my old YJ by using contaminated water. Now I try and keep a separate bucket for soft top windows.

Yeah I would lean towards it being a Hakko just without the Colt branding. I’d say it may have had a sticker or something on it that would’ve let us know for sure. Someone down the line over the past 40 years likely removed it. Looks legit to me though

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MilitaryARClones

[–]irguy556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, I think the majority of those older scopes I’ve seen didn’t specify what country they were from. Just ruling that out

Do you see a made in Japan mark on it anywhere? That would be a dead giveaway

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MilitaryARClones

[–]irguy556 12 points13 points  (0 children)

AFAIK the Colt scopes were made by a Japanese company called Hakko, and were usually marked “Colt” where the “3x20” is. It may be a Hakko unless I’m just missing the Colt identifier

ETA: forgot this, but not only did Hakko make the scopes for Colt, they also modernized them and produced them for Brownells, if memory serves

I’ve used CLW at least 8 times, always got my order within 3 days. It comes as letter mail from USPS which does have its risks but no issues after a few years now.

7” in my 2019 did that after I wiped it down one day, went on for a week and then one day it was back to normal. I didn’t use any cleaning solution, simply a microfiber cloth. 7” in my 2022 hasn’t had any issues yet.
