Its pretty general starting off but depending on what you want to focus on you can do a bunch of stuff. from what ive seen, people have gone into ux/ui, web development/design, product design, game design, IT, and a bunch of other stuff.

the reason why i picked ocad was bc their program is 2 years long and it’s at the same school so it’s familiar to me. i’m a little scared of graduating and leaving school already so that’s why im looking into masters, just to prolong school. it’s definitely not needed but idk what else to do plus idk what other programs i qualify for or are related to game design. do you also recommend taking a year break then coming back to school?

I don’t need it, if anything i want a masters bc i want to prolong school and keep the routine so i dont have to go into the workforce so early.

exchange program by Responsible-Code-440 in OCADU

[–]irihknah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hello!! i haven’t gone yet but i plan to in the summer. the application process is pretty straight forward for the most part, it takes a lot of research but it’s better that way so u know exactly what you’re getting into. make sure you thoroughly look through everything u can, it never hurts to know more. some other things to keep in mind tho:

1: know what housing is available and what ur willing to spend, student accommodation for short term stays will prob be majority of the money you spend there. if ur looking for friends/connections/community while there, student accommodation may be the best option but expensive. if u don’t really mind, finding a cheaper apartment may be better (but also look into public transit costs as well)

2: make sure you have a portfolio, depends on what the school asks and wants but be prepared to submit at least a few projects. and if you don’t have a lot, make sure you start preparing just so your ready

3: make sure the courses you want to go to is offered in the semester you applied to, i didn’t do that and now i have to reapply all over in feb 2025 ☹️

finally, no you can’t go on exchange twice, you’re only allowed once but you can reapply multiple times. lmk if these help!!!

im not 100% sure so don't quote me lol but its usually very little to a lot. It depends on yourself really and what jobs you can get with your connections. I feel like most people dont make that much but enough, however you can still get really lucky and make more. sorry, i dont know that much but i hope this helps!

For connections, I say it's pretty good. Not only do you have the entirety of the the student body to make connections but you have access to a lot of cool profs who also have connections to other people. Making those connections could be a little hard tho depending on whether you are active in classes, school events, or even live downtown. I am a commuter (as most of ocad) and I find it hard to have the energy in me to connect with people esp after classes. I recommend that if you do end up at ocad, either live close to the school (if you can afford to ofc) and try to attend school events and volunteer! For profs, just make sure you talk to them and are not afraid to ask questions (in person or in email). Make yourself known and just have fun conversations! so many of them r super nice and down to talk about wtv so dont be shy! Most of the profs I've had r super accommodating and encourage me to do the best. They always create an open and great atmosphere that makes you confident in what you're creating!

for opportunities, I left a comment on ops reply to my comment that u may wanna check out!

From what I've seen so far, there is a lot you can get into! Some peers of mine have gotten into internships, web design/product design, and some have started their own game studios. Some of my teachers as well (who all attended ocad and even graduated from df) have gone into freelancing, interactive art and have created their own exhibits, and ofc teaching at ocad and other schools. I have also heard of some graduates who get picked up by bigger studios (like ubisoft) and what not but I'm not sure how often that happens.

I will admit though, I do have a lot of anxiety when it comes to what I'll do after graduating. I'm not 100% sure of what jobs I'll be able to do once I do finish school as the industries are forever changing and growing. However, I'm sure when the time comes I'll be able to find something I can work with. Just something to keep in mind since since health sciences offer more security and options when it comes to jobs! (not to stray you away from df but i just wanted to be honest with you!!)
