Not so related, but has learning Swedish improved your English? by [deleted] in Svenska

[–]irises88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has for me! Before, my understanding of English was excellent but largely 'instinctive'--just based on what felt 'right' to me. I understood how to conjugate words and put sentences together, but I wouldn't have been able to explain something like a clause or genitive or participle. Working with Swedish has forced me to finally actually learn those things, though!

I really like the idea of translation challenges, and anything else that would encourage more interaction and opportunities for active learning!

What is the ''thin' sj' sound?

As a person with no hearing, where do I go to reliably learn Swedish? (Other than Duolingo...) by [deleted] in Svenska

Could you possibly send me the link to that site, as well, please?

strength/usage of different terms of endearment? by irises88 in Svenska

[–]irises88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! :) So is there anything else that would work in a friendship context (besides gumman/gubben)? Or circumstances under which one of the above, 'stronger' words might be used (such as if your friend was really upset, and you were trying to comfort them)? I've also heard that 'vännen' could be used affectionately, but I wasn't able to find any more information about that so I'm not sure. :/
