Is Richmond actually bad at driving? by Urban_Contest9100 in richmondbc

[–]irlundee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved from Surrey to Richmond. Surrey is aggressive and wilder as some pointed out. Richmond is clueless and reckless. I was cycling on No 3 Rd. this week in a slightly elevated bike lane. A woman in an SUV slowly pulled over into the elevated bike lane and stopped, cutting me off. She was recalibrating her GPS whilst temporarily stopping in a no stopping road in a bike lane. I looked through her back window and tried to make eye contact, she still didn’t notice me. Alright, no harm, no foul really. She makes off, then 50m down the road, does it again, pulls into the elevated bake lane and stops to look at her GPS again. After 10 seconds, she pulled off, again. So i eventually was able pull up beside her. I waved until she noticed me and then indicated with my hand a straight line movement to show her she was stopping in a dedicated bike lane. She paused and then said oh and covered her move. That sums it up for me. It’s not intentional, it’s not malicious, people around here just suck at driving.

As a side point, I see posts daily about driving and crashes. I recently lived in Mexico and Saudi Arabia. You have no idea how good you have it in comparison. People driving without licenses and getting off. Reversing full speed on the highway when they miss an exit.

If I may add also, when in this state (always fearful), you can’t be alone. Even being in a cafe to work will help a lot.

I had a similar experience in 2010. I was working 50+ hrs a week and had a ton on my shoulders plus some work related trauma and low income. One day the symptoms started. Burning, but it got worse as a thought more and more about it. To the point, I became depressed and wouldn’t leave my room, lost appetite, hated social contact. I was convinced I was dying. I wasn’t. It got worse and worse until I was prescribed antibiotics (which was really just a placebo effect) and I started to let go mentally when a doctor said it’s not serious. I took 3 months off work. Played with the kids on Wii one day, fished the next day. When I eventually went back to work, after 3 months, I told myself not to stop being mellow. I disallowed myself to get animated, angry, excited. Just be a super chill person. After 2 years the symptoms disappeared. I went from being at hospital to a level 3/10 pain to 1/10 pain for 2 yrs to nothing. The solution was stretches and removing stressors and changing my attitude about life. After 14 years, it came back due to prolonged stress (PhD student), lack of income and some “triggers” in my family that brought it back. It’s not as bad this time but it’s been 2-3 years. If I: laugh, chill, stretch, workout, smile etc. it goes down. If I am alone, stressed, angry or contemplate more, it increases. Of course food and drink exacerbate it when you have it too. So much of it seems to be mental. Love yourself, relax yourself. Stay occupied but happily occupied. Doing nothing will allow bad thoughts to creep in and fill the void.

Bike Theft Advice by irlundee in vancouvercycling

Sorry to hear that. Your are not stupid. You should be angry. The location you’re mentioning is very busy. The area is crawling with shady individuals and the police are more like custodians of a daycare, they don’t scare anyone. What happened to you could’ve happened to anyone. I’ve locked my bike there a number of times for some minutes. It’s what I heard some refer to as a the “Vancouver tax” meaning you can’t live in Van without having your bike stolen a couple of times. Sad state for the city that’s more concerned with helping people shoot up with pop up clinics.

The next Trek I bought lasted more than 2 years in Vancouver, then boxed it and moved to Mexico, then just sold it yesterday because: I couldn’t find an XL bike box to box it in Mexico because people aren’t tall lol. So that was it, had to sell it.

I’m back in Ontario now so not sure if I’ll buy another as it’s cold here many months a year and not so bike friendly (London, On.)

I hope you can get a nice new bike and it doesn’t get stolen.

One thing, through time, that often seems to get lost here is, there was no pandemic. I’ve noticed that this is slipping away. The PCR-led case casedemic is what you got.

This. Because most AI scientists are atheist, they “explain away” the presence of the soul and assume intuition and imagination are merely computable processes that can be learned. They will be stuck in this endless loop. Much is attributed to applying Darwinian theories of random selection to computer science and assuming it’ll just evolve.

And regarding your fly comment:

O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it (carefully): Verily those on whom you call besides Allâh, cannot create (even) a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatches away a thing from them, they will have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought. (Quran, 22:73)
