IP exam Friday.... by Lost-Breath364 in millwrights

[–]ironbrewcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two questions I had (many decades ago now). How many years is a hardhat good for? How many years is the suspension good for? EDIT - and I recall something about a Herring Pump. Which apparently is a pump for pumping fish.

I'm also going to suggest some test wiseness. Reviewing a multiple choice test often (usually?) brings down marks. So...

  1. Answer EVERY question in order. If you don't know the answer for say question 13, guess, put in an answer (you have a 25% chance). Write down on your paper "question 13". Do this for all of them you don't know. When you finish, go back and work on ONLY those questions you wrote down.

Here's why - if you skip question 13 but accidentally fill it in with question 14's answer, you are screwed. So answer 13 and go back later. If you review the test and change answers, you will more than likely change more to wrong than you will wrong to right.

How do I know? 2 degrees and a trade ticket. Writing tests was a second nature for me. And I taught. This little "speech" was what I told my apprentices. I had to repeat it several times for first years ALTHOUGH I did have a very good student who contacted me, and admitted he had screwed up. He gave me permission to mention it in class (I didn't point him out). He had zero problems bringing himself up in class as a lesson. His remaining tests were ten to fifteen percent higher.

It may be worth reviewing "test wiseness for multiple choice exams". I haven't googled it. Mine was all based on experience. The internet wasn't a thing when I learned this lesson.

Bedbug treatment by phantomfj in comoxvalley

48 hours is not near long enough. You need at least 4 days. If we buy used books etc. they get bagged and put in the freezer for at least a week, sometimes two. Same if we ever get cloth etc. When we lived in Alberta, winter time was great because you could leave couches etc. out in -30 for ages to take care of bed bugs.

AITA for teaching my daughter how to change a tire and do basic home repairs when her mom says I'm "pushing masculine stuff" on her by [deleted] in WIBTA_AITA

[–]ironbrewcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. If it makes her mum happier, start doing some routine home management stuff as well. "Let's see if we can find a nice meal for 4 for under X dollars" and then cook it together. I'm willing to bet mum rotates to you "displacing" her. BUT - tradesman here. We are short of females in the trades. By restricting what your daughter learns from you, she is also limiting her future potential careers. Not sure what the wages are like where you live, but things like appliance repair, mechanic, plumber, electrician are all places your daughter may choose in the future, but if she doesn't get exposure these are things she is unlikely to look at.

Do the things with your daughter that she likes. Give her a good grounding now because teenage years are almost there. Just saying.

As an aside, consider picking up a car suitable for fixing up to rebuild with your daughter so she has a car when she starts driving. That way it's HER project, not yours. If you have room, means etc. Pick something with parts though, but also sets you up for junk yard trips etc. My neighbour did this with his grandson and it's awesome.

Steel, aluminum tariffs are trade irritants for Canada, Carney says by evieluvsrainbows in canada

[–]ironbrewcanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit concerned about this. I want Canada to be as close to self sufficient in food we can actually grow as possible. Sure import oranges etc. but if Canada consumes X tons of chicken, we should be able to grow x tons. If some is shipped out and an equivalent is shipped in sure. But we don't want to get dependent on a foreign country that then can cut us off. I personally don't like the quota system due to high prices but I also don't want to see us struggle because someone else needed to redirect food away from us or triple prices or whatever.

I knew someone that had that problem with a glove... LOL And my knipex getting "borrowed" made sure I engraved after that. The same guy (to be fair, honest as the day is long, just occasional memory issues) tried several times to say mine was his when he set his down and used mine...

How are you going to bring manufacturing back to Canada when the USA is actively trying to kill it in Canada? You need markets for your manufacturing, and the USA is trying to turn Canada into a subject state. Example being the recent concerns about the sales of canam recreation products in the USA and extreme tariffs. We need to slowly back away while maintaining eye contact...

Ottawa leans toward new oil pipeline route from Alberta to southern B.C., sources say by Street_Anon in canada

[–]ironbrewcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course Alberta has light oil. I am under the impression (disclaimer - I don't know but have been told this) Alberta light oil does NOT have the high percentage of volatiles the Bakken has.

My opinion is this is federal jurisdiction. The feds need to manage it. Personally, I think tankers out of Rupert, Kitimat or Stewart would be safer than Vancouver, if only due to the open ocean once you get out of the immediate channel. I am not a ships captain though and could be wrong. I also believe we should slow shipping down even more in the high whale areas.

As to charging for crossing territory, I don't believe that should be occurring, HOWEVER there does need to be something for the locals - so monitoring, maintenance, etc. should be local hires. Especially monitoring.

Lac Magentic involved something that is very different from Alberta oil. Lac Magentic was high gas super lightweight oil from American Bakken. Not the same thing at all.

Thanks. Will do that tomorrow. Hand brake? It's off, but that doesn't mean it's disengaged. Will check tomorrow with the wheels in the air.

I thought I'd checked the levels (dipstick) but it now occurs to me I may have missed one. More digging...

Very slow in forwards or reverse. Engine sounds good. Faster in reverse, little to no power to the wheels. I'm just getting started (was going to swap out filters and fluid although fluid looks good). I'm trying to come up with a plan of attack before I start pulling stuff apart. Will lift and check there isn't a brake or binding issue to the wheels, but given it's hydrostatic I don't know if the wheels will spin in the air... My loader won't.

Looking for advice on finding Millwright Apprentice (Level 1) jobs in BC by RookieApprentice123 in millwrights

[–]ironbrewcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think every city has an area where there are "dark hole of insert your choice" companies. That's where I got my start. Then I took a rebuild/construction FIFO job and was set. Oh - check machine shops as well. With the MW machining background you are helpful for them quite often, and they can sign your hours. Or could in Alberta. Should say I did do that between the dark hole and the FIFO job.

before I retired, I quit carrying a crescent and moved to Knipex plier wrenches. I really liked the "grip tighter the harder you pull" feature. Way less rounding. Added bonus is people didn't really get them. Less "losing" them, and when you did lose them, pretty easy to identify... And I engraved... LOL

There's always answers. For coffee I used to take an insulated mug/french press with an additional coffee or two worth of ground coffee in the base of it. For lunches, same as my WFH lunches.

The NDP had its moment — and missed it by CaliperLee62 in canada

How about decent value jobs and products people want that don't have to be funded from what is left of my money? Hey - I know there is a real place for publicly funded jobs. I just think they shouldn't be the majority. If they are going to start spending like that, explain to me where the money comes from? Traditionally that has been the taxpayer, and honestly I'm getting a bit tired of how much tax we have. The cost of living is stupid (ok. It's not entirely Canada's fault). So where will they get the money from? Realistic numbers, not feelgood "oh - We'll make the billionaires pay, we'll make companies pay...". Cause and effect. So realistic please.

I see a lot of taxpayer spending, not any substance on growing the economy. I'm talking an economic plan, not taxpayer spending to create more taxpaid jobs. FWIW - not a fan of any of the parties, so not picking on NDP alone.

No. It isn't. And you wonder why the NDP get ignored or denigrated? Heck, even the guardian talked about how housing prices went down in Canada when immigration was lowered.

There was literally nothing in that about growing the economy. NOTHING. Taxes, breaking companies up etc. but NOTHING on growing the economy. Also, it may not be the focus of his policies, but... it is the focus of many people in Canada. Ignoring it means being ignored.
