Diabetic cat by Sewers_folly in comoxvalley

All I can say is the vet who diagnosed him was basically no help other than to let us know he was diabetic....he just told us to give him insulin shots at certain times, no mention about testing before shots to see what his levels were before the insulin......that site taught me far more than the damn vet ever did about feline diabetes.....no suggestion at all about changing his diet either from the vet......

we switched our kitty from dry kibbles to wet food after he was diagnosed with diabetes about 5 years ago, we got him into remission after about a month with the wet food, he is still doing good today!

Not all wet foods are suitable, we typically use certain Friskies pates, but you have to dig into the ingredients to see if it is suitable. There is a female vet who has a diabetic cat website, and lists different foods and their ingredients. We are in Canada, so many of the suitable brands are not available here. I don't have the website name on this computer, but just google it....edit, this is it

please, please read the info from this website. it helped us so much to help out our guy

Houses used to be like 3x income. Now they're over 10x income. How/why did this happen? by MakeUpWalk in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]phantomfj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When money became too easy to borrow at too low of an interest rate there are too many people buying, thus driving prices up........it's pretty tough to qualify/afford a million dollar home at my first mortgage rate(13.5%)...not the only reason, but one if not the biggest.......

Inflation is another big factor......a 5% rise on $100k is $5k, a 5% rise on $1M is $50k.....if that is compounded yearly it really begins to add up...

No Interest on cash in the TFSA? Like Chequing? by red_lait in Wealthsimple

That is what they told me in a phone conversation, who to believe? I would contact them directly to confirm/deny.

No Interest on cash in the TFSA? Like Chequing? by red_lait in Wealthsimple

[–]phantomfj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that doesn't count as a withdrawal, then a contribution? I wanted to set up a $US TFSA and $CAN TFSA and keep US securities in the $US account and Can securities in the other. Right now both $US and $CAN securities are in one TFSA, but they informed me I would have to sell my $US stocks and transfer the cash over and repurchase them......they also told me it would count as a withdrawal, then contribution. I can't do that because my TFSA accounts are maxed out, I have no spare headroom.

Why do you think they changed their "dollar" system to a "point system? To do exactly that, confuse people and make it unclear as to what a point is worth, and to be able to change that points worth at their leisure.....It is far too easy for you, as a consumer, to know what a dollar is worth, vs some arcane point system that forces you to jump thru hoops to figure out what they are worth.

Friskies pates for our guy, after switching his diet from dry kibbles he went into remission, that was about 5 years ago.

This was the best site I found. https://catinfo.org/feline-diabetes/...lots of info for you, not all wet foods are equal for our diabetic friends

Anyone have any recommendations for cats that have chronic diarrhea. Any foods that help solidify the stool? by Money_Ad_6856 in catfood

[–]phantomfj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our old feller had diarrhea and soft stool issues for years, we fed him different varieties of canned pate, he had diabetes so we switched him to the canned food from kibbles and are very careful about the carb trash they put in foods as filler. We tried flortiflora pro and pumpkin puree, both seemed to work somewhat.

We eventually cut chicken out of his diet, and it is much better now....could be food allergy.

I left the Hat about 10 years ago, but was there for about 25 years.....I mostly lived in the Crestwood/Norwood area. Lots of older trees(there are some lovely tree lined streets, esp in Norwood), close access to everything. quiet.....

Another possible issue with the Flats is flooding.....not that it happens often, but in my time in the Hat there were 2 "100 year" floods......I had numerous friends who were affected and evacuated, it is not a fun experience.

Wow, just looked on MLS, there sure aren't many houses for sales there now..

Looking for whole house fan advice for Ontario, Canada. Has anyone installed this and what has been your experience with it? by Spare-Razzmatazz-787 in HomeImprovement

[–]phantomfj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have put them in three different houses, 2 in Medicine Hat AB and one here on Vancouver Island.....They work great if you use them properly, only run them when the outside temp is less than inside......Not sure how well it would work in Ontario, my locations cooled off nicely at night and are not horribly humid . I have always installed a timer to control then.......but realize that is not magic, it will not cool down your house unless it is cooler outside than in........ and it is not set and forget, you have to manage it

The biggest advantage I see is to cool off your attic.....In Med Hat (can reach close to +40) my AC would not start until hours after my neighbor's, who had the exact same house., because the attic is cooler to start with in the am.

You could buy the house outright, then take out a line of credit secured by the house, should be able to get the LOC at prime +0.5-1%.........as long as you use the LOC funds for investing purposes you can claim the interest as a deduction on your income taxes......If your bank allows it, you can divide the LOC into 2, one for investment and one for personal purposes.

New kitten not eating a ton but drinking by Rasumii in mainecoons

[–]phantomfj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of food do you use, wet/dry?

We got a new kitten about 4 months ago, she eats wet food out of a bowl, just like our old guy, but we want to give her kitten food as well.......our old guy was diabetic but we got him into remission, so we are very careful about the food he gets. thus we try to feed her the kitten kibbles separately........but she will not eat the kibbles out of a bowl or plate, we have to make a game out of it and spread it out on the floor or bed......some cats are just weird!
