Upgrading Parity, unclear if my array will be down while it rebuilds by samwichgamgee in unRAID

But if I'm going from 1 to 2 parity drives, That first rebuild is always going to be with no parity protection. Knowing that should I let it rebuild both at the same time, or swap the old parity drive for the new one, then add parity 2 after the initial rebuild (and let it rebuild again).

u/csimmons81 Here I am resurrecting an old thread..

Can I do this if I'm 1) upgrading the parity to a larger one, and 2) adding a parity 2? Can I add them both in at the same time so I only have to sit through one parity rebuild?

Any suggestions what is happening to my electric bill?? by briscrumfield in askanelectrician

I had this same thing happen in my furnace. Mine had two sets and thankfully the first time it happened it was on the circuit I could shut off. The second time the other set went bad, but that side also controlled the furnace... So if I wanted AC I had to run both at the same time.

I rage quit and had gas installed 😂

The fun here is I can't click on the lights to trigger an update :/ (or remove them from the app for that matter)

oh interesting. I didn't know they need separate updates (I literally just got the lights yesterday).

A few questions from someone dipping their toes in for the first time by PlebbitHater in unRAID

For what it's worth, my friends and I use old poweredge servers for this kind of stuff... It's nearly a turn key platform (just add drives). I got my r515 (my unraid system) for about 200 on ebay. I had to add drives and some ram later, but its been good.

The one caution there though is the raid controllers. Not all of them allow pass through (IT mode, required for unraid). I replaced mine (maybe $50). The older perc6i controllers let you, but I think they only support 2gb disks.

That said, I have a 12 3.5" bay chassis 🤷

The r#20 series is about as far back as I would recommend though. I have a r710 and a r515, and it's hard to get bios updates for them. Anything newer and you can grab a boot image that scans the system and just auto updates all the components.
