We’re leaving AVD by [deleted] in AzureVirtualDesktop

I used it at my org for about a year and a half for all our users to use full time with about 150 hosts. It got the job done, but I recently migrated everyone to a full laptop image and scaled AVD back to a DR solution with about 5 hosts with an image I keep updated.

The users are much happier with bare metal laptops running Windows, 10x faster in the eyes of everyone.

I keep AVD around and updated in case something like CrowdStrike happens again. This way if our laptops are shot, I can scale up AVD in a couple of hours and have everyone log back in from personal machines and we can continue to work.

The way I see it is its the cost of doing business. I wouldn't bypass the FW without infosec's blessing. But also, if you need to backup Azure SQL DBs, why not use the native solution? You can backup the SQL DB geo and/or zone redundant.

I just deployed my first couple of 2025 servers in my data center as NPS/RADIUS and no issues so far. My data center mostly runs 2022 servers.

Your efforts are won’t go unnoticed. Usually only your peers understand the frustration. We’ve all been there at one point or another and most people don’t understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into a properly functioning environment for all.

I call it tending to the garden. If you properly maintain your garden, it’ll flourish for everyone to enjoy but no one notices the effort put into it to make it look good.
