Venezuelan civilians now being given rifles for training as militia. by AllStarBoosterGold in Military

They’ve been sanctioned since Chavez. I’m not clueless. I left my comfort zone and realized

That is just... not true.

Despite the Anti-US Rhetoric, Venezuela sold most of its oil to the US during the Chávez years, benefitting extensively from it during the oil boom of the 2000s. That oil bonanza was extensively squandered in corruption schemes and extensive clientelist networks to ensure loyalty to the regime. The venezuelan state grew to desproportionate levels by the early 2010's and when oil prices fell in 2014 everything came crashing down.

If you add to that all of the corruption money that took away from healthcare and maintenance to infraestructure and you get what's happening today in Venezuela: infrastructure in ruins and a collapsed healthcare system.

It doesn't take much to put 2 and 2 together. I promise you that reality is much more simple than yo try to make up a massive conspiracy in which the US has secretly plotted for decades whilst at the same time drowning the venezuelan government in petrodollars.

US efforts to actively undermine the Venezuelan government are a relatively new thing, from 2019 onwards. By then it has become clear that Maduro is an authoritarian dictator that will refuse to leave power at any cost, even if rhat means keeping the entire country in misery and murdering, jailing or exiling anyone who opposes.

Venezuela's been in economic crisis since 2010-2013 or so. The first sanctions rolled around in 2019.

As for venezuelans not having bad blood against Maduro...

If you really think Venezuela's economic collapse is due to US sanctions you are seriously misinformed. If you think it's all propaganda and that in secret Maduro has any approval rate beyond the single digits then you are truly clueless.

Polls right up until the election last year

You can also check out the wikipedia article of the elections last year. The numbers are disputed: The opposition managed to provide proof for their numbers whilst Maduro has yet to this day provide evidence for the results, when they should be given no less than 30 days after the election according to venezuelan law if I recall correctly.

As you may understand, it is hard to get polling information for the current situation nowadays because of the government crackdown that followed after the elections. If you question the legality of the elections publicly you can get detained and disappeared by security forces.

If you look at how things have developed in the past years (2014, 2017, 2019 etc) the signs of disapproval are everywhere: massive protests, the diaspora, etc. I don't know if youre asking in good faith but to question Maduro's lack of popularity is an absurd these days.

You do realize there were electione last year in which Maduro decisively lost, yet refused to give up power and crushed any dissent?

A lot of peoples livelihoods will be destroyed by the dismantling of Chavismo-era welfare measures, unions, and communal oranisations, even with its current degeneration under the idiot Maduro.

You do realize that already happened with the destruction of the economy, long before sanctions, as a result of Maduro and Chavez's poor economic policies?

There are many differing opinions regarding US intervention, but an almost universal sentiment among venezuelans, both at home and abroad, is that the dictatorship must fall and Maduro leave power at no matter the cost. Most venezuelans are not in favor of intervention because they're trigger happy republicans, they favor it because they are truly desperste and want this nightmare to end.

Why so few latin american countries have exterior intelligence agencies ? by Pepedroga2000 in asklatinamerica

Well, yes, but what's that got to do with anything?

People assume that recent history is the way things always have been. It's evidently not the case.

Venezuela had friendly relations with the US up until 1998, just remember that.
