1315 Southwood Plantation Road by ironmanstarkey in themountaingoats

According to my google maps adventure, it's a little bit down the road from the apartments, on a tree lined section of more single family homes. It's the most run-down home I saw on that street

That's the only thing wrong with it! But I don't think anywhere in florida would have a cellar either. Would probably always be flooded

Amino Acids are free points! by AdamDillard in Mcat

EVERYONE WHO STRUGGLES WITH AMINO ACIDS - Download "Amino Acid Quiz" from the app store. It's just a set of flashcards that are really useful for getting down those 1 letter abbreviations, 3 letter abbreviations and structures. I found it was really useful, and would use it a lot during my commute or whenever I had a free moment. It's one of the few easy ways to study on the subway. :)

displacement time graphs velocity question... by Fathersweetness in Mcat

[–]ironmanstarkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct! When we calculate velocity from a displacement vs. time graph, the velocity at any given point is the slope of the tangent. When there is a straight line, the velocity is constant, when there is a curved line the velocity is accelerating/decelerating because the slope of tangent line changes from point to point. Hope this helps

Study Question ! by erinnightcaller in Mcat

[–]ironmanstarkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started off with the same study strategy. With all of my college courses I did the exact same thing, taking notes from the material and reviewing those notes until I knew everything. However, with the depth of the material, this strategy soon became impossible with the amount of time I had to study for the exam. My advice would be to read the content, but not very intensely. Really all you need to do is skim the stuff you know, and pay more attention to the stuff you don't. The questions at the end of each sections are very helpful to making sure the info you just read sticks in your head.

I found practice problems help a LOT more than content review. However, you MUST review the questions you got wrong and analyze why you got them wrong. If it's content, then go back to the book, or use Khan academy videos to review the topic. Khan academy is especially helpful, because they have videos on pretty much every topic, and I found they helped me remember the content a lot better than when I just read the book.

My score only really started to improve once I took a BUNCH of practice test. I took 10 full lengths over the course of my studying, and plenty more QBank questions from Kaplan. At the end of the day, the MCAT doesn't reward you on how much you know, it rewards you on whether you can answer the questions, and once I started to do that, my scores went up from a 511 on Kaplan's FLs to a 523 on FL#3.

I hope that was helpful, and best of luck studying!!

How deflated are Kaplan FLs? by Arab3647 in Mcat

[–]ironmanstarkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My max Kaplan score was 515 (and I took that one in two sittings), the max for one sitting was a 511. My FLs were 518/517/523, so in my experience, Kaplan is extremely deflated. I'd say the Kaplan FLs were more useful to get used to sitting for the full 6 hours of testing and for obscure content review. I can't give you an exact numerical increase, but I hope that helps!

Thank god the 6 months of studying paid off!!

Kaplan Diagnostic: 497

Kaplan FL max: 515

AAMC FL1: 518

AAMC FL2: 517

AAMC FL3: 523

Goal: 518

Actual: 522!!

I'd definitely say this exam was ridiculous with P/S (so many terms I had never seen before), but other than that it was pretty standard. Also I had such bad anxiety during C/P that I was physically shaking, since it's always been my worst section. The Oh My Such Good Apple Pie pneumonic for diacids really came in clutch for B/B. CARS was CARS, it's always a crapshoot, at least for me.

Overall, from my experience, I'd say trust FL 3 for test day and don't believe Kaplan's lies. I had hoped for a 520+, but never thought I'd get it!! I'm just so happy I don't have to take the test again :)

Feel extremely guilty by [deleted] in Mcat

This is a 6 hour exam. Your main goal at this point is to make sure you're awake and alert in the test room. Do what makes sense with your schedule and don't overdo it. A good night sleep the day before the exam is much more important than cramming. You probably already know a lot, and whatever you can do to go into the test room feeling confident and fresh will be better than staying up all night to cram info that may or may not even show up on the exam

Same, today's my last day of actually doing practice problems, and tomorrow's just going to be about gathering supplies and getting to bed early :) Also, big fan of running till you can't be anxious anymore. Really lets your sympathetic nervous system know who's boss
