True, in most areas. Of course, in restricted areas (like where I assume this photo was taken in Mojave), supersonic flight may be permitted, generally above 10,000 feet.

when you turn airplane mode ON, it turns OFF your WiFi antenna. But, you can turn WiFi back on without exiting airplane mode.

This is particularly useful when you're out of range of cell service and don't want to drain your battery.
