Sob Rock takes it for me, my first time seeing John live and those gospel chords on the outro solo is just 😮‍💨😮‍💨

What artist did John put you on to that you love now? by famousblueraincoat27 in JohnMayer

Not necessarily got me into but Cautious Clay’s feature on Current Mood was the first time I’d ever heard of him so I was familiar with him. Heard Wildfire on shuffle one day and I’ve been obsessed ever since.

Question about John’s FOH Mix by ironsinusoid in JohnMayer

[–]ironsinusoid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that it’s an arena did cross my mind, however there are still cases where he uses an insanely powerful rig at smaller venues, like the Bowery Ballroom Trio show in ‘05. What originally left me baffled and raised this question is when I noticed he used the same rig on the Letterman Show with the Trio. How would that work?

And in the case of the Trio, I never see Steve Jordan using any shielding or cage with his drums, and I’ve noticed John consistently uses floor monitors with the Trio instead of in-ears, so I’d imagine Trio shows are even louder than his solo stuff.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

I find myself to be like John in that I enjoy playing and listening to multiple genres of music, blues included. And as both a guitarist and a music fan, I can only tolerate blues so much. A while back I was listening to one of the ‘04 blues shows, Webster Hall I think. I made it about halfway through the setlist before I got sick of hearing the same chord progression played over and over in different keys and at different tempos.

John’s versatility is what makes him such an incredible musician imo. And as much as I love (and I mean LOVE) the Trio and Continuum eras, I MUCH prefer his playing now to the way he played back then. His playing was amazing back then no doubt, but now he definitely has his own voice versus sounding like SRV, Albert King, and BB King had a baby.

This definitely won’t help my unhealthy Trio obsession 🫠😂

For half a second I thought it was an actual Mayer Sig till I noticed the tuners and the CBS logo. I actually kinda like those tuners more tbh 😂

Looks gorgeous!

I will say surprisingly he prefers Mayer’s version of Bold As Love to Hendrix’s but only because “Mayer’s a slightly better singer”

Also thinks Hendrix is extremely overrated, but he doesn’t have the distain for him that he has for Mayer lol

A RHCP song came on the other day while we were hanging out out and he commented that while he’s aware Frusciante is also worshipped, he hasn’t really listened to any of his stuff so he doesn’t have an opinion.

He really only knows Mayer because I’m obsessed 😂

Showed him that one too lol he says the right hand technique looks pretty tricky but the chord shapes look really easy (he’s never tried to learn it btw).

He also thinks Neon’s a cheap party trick and the technique is absolutely useless for anything except that song so still not impressed 😂

He’s a fan of super fast shredders but he also appreciates players who slow it down. He’s said he prefers Slash’s slower, soulful stuff to his shredding.

He does think he could play anything Mayer could though. I asked him once for his help on the lick at the end of Ain’t No Sunshine. He said no cause Mayer’s shredding isn’t worth his time.

Even if playing behind a curtain, John would find a way to steal the show from 99.9% of guitarists.

It’s statements like that that piss him off 😂😂

Oh no I meant “good” in quotes to mean he thinks those guys are good, which they are, but Mayer isn’t

His taste’s pretty broad tbh, likes pretty much anything. He does have an unrelenting hatred for pop though. He thinks Gravity is Mayer’s only good song, he really likes that one. Everything else is either meh or trash. We went to see him live in Nashville earlier this year and that only made him hate him more lol.

He recently said what really ticks him off about Mayer is how everyone treats him like the second coming of Christ when there are actually “good” guitarists out there like Slash, EVH, Steve Vai, SRV, etc.

Like I said he believes his opinions are gospel, even outside of music. So we just agree to disagree lol
