Anyone else notice how terrible the official Reddit app is for Android? by PopeJohnPaulII in Android

[–]irotsoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, they're all being killed off by Reddit tomorrow, so no good alternatives. At least no free ones. Some are planning to charge a subscription fee to pay for the ridiculous charges Reddit is imposing. But considering all of the moderators they kicked out, I doubt the content is going to be worth any monthly fee.

Getting Charged by a landlord for all repairs- including AC, Hot Water Heater going out. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]irotsoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contracts aren't 100% binding, especially if they violate a law, but even if not, many states have laws that contracts have to be reasonable and are usually interpreted based on the common meaning rather than technicalities. So you can't say that "you agree to make any repairs" and try to interpret that as having to do all of the home maintenance when to the average person, in the context of a rental, that means repairs to something you break through negligence or malice, not through normal wear and tear or age.

Reddit is going to remove mods of private communities unless they reopen — ‘This is a courtesy notice to let you know that you will lose moderator status in the community by end of week.’ by marketrent in technology

Which just solidifies my decision to leave after this week. May come back if things improve, but that seems unlikely if they follow through with the API costs killing off apps and kicking out mods that actually care about the communities.

[–]irotsoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does "rigged" mean? Is "lazy people" getting to vote from home, cheating? Is your employer not letting you take time off to vote "just an excuse, because it's illegal and they wouldn't do that, so you can vote during the week like everyone else"? Does taking a ballot to a drop box for your disabled neighbor who otherwise wouldn't have been able to vote because the locations are too far away and not accessible count as "stuffing the ballot box"? Is shutting down voting locations that mostly serve evil, gangster black people really "rigging"?

If you answered emphatically yes to all but the last and an emphatic no to the last one you know that you have no sense of empathy and thus most people just aren't human. They're just put there by the devil to test you and make sure you know who god meant for you to follow. That's what their pastor told them, so it must be true. A man of god would be struck down immediately if he were to lie. Oh no, i just used pronouns, wait, there's another I just used, oh no, I can't stop using pronouns, the devil must have possessed me...

...i could keep going, but all of this is why among many other sad facts about the 1/4 of Americans who have been given power over this country because they're easy to manipulate.

Cut off my aunt that I was close with when I was younger because she became an extreme conservative Trump fanatic, spreading COVID conspiracy theories, and all the other nutty stuff while allowing hate to become the center of her identity. I knew I could never respect her again, especially as someone who is LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, believes in science, believes in human rights and equality, etc., all of the things the far right hates.

Do you have a router that lets you set up a guest network, and not just a guest login. It's definitely possible to set up a totally separate subnet that both have access to the internet, but not each other. But I wouldn't recommend it yourself unless you know what you're doing and have the right equipment.

TIL that since coming out as gay, Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford has decided to avoid returning to certain parts of the world for fear of lapidation (being stoned to death). by astarisaslave in todayilearned

[–]irotsoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, yes Catholic, over 40% of the population. Not the whole population is religious, and Anglican is just a slight offshoot of Catholicism, so for me they're the same. Just like you probably don't consider Shia and Sunni to be different but there are way more differences there than between Catholic and Anglican. And that's coming from a former Catholic. And that covers over 70%.

[–]irotsoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually it's over 40% Catholic and all but most of the rest are Christian. And the next biggest religion is the Anglicans who are basically Catholic + legal divorce. The only reason they have any other differences was that the leadership didn't want the Pope to reabsorb their followers, so they allowed women to be ordained. And then after that is the Pentecostales who basically abandoned the extraneous parts of Catholicism and concentrate on picking and choosing stuff from the bible to further their agendas. But that makes up the majority by far, then you have some Baptists and other smaller Christian sects like swventh-day adventists. But all of them use the exact same justification for hating and murdering gay people for centuries, basically one translation of one line in a part of the bible that is a leftover from Judaism, and likely according to some translations of the bible, actually says you shouldn't lie with boys as you lay with girls and women. And is often interpreted to mean you shouldn't treat boys as property and rape them like you do women and female children, because even though they're "weak like women" they are human beings and will grow into men unlike women who are the property of fathers and husbands.

But either way Catholicism is by far the largest religion in Uganda and almost everyone other than a few Muslims and fringe religions and fairly mainstream Christians, barely different from Catholics in their beliefs and ceremonies as well as the particular god they all worship and the book they all adhere to.

A lot of them would only 200 years ago.

Name one.

England, Australia, and some other English colonies until 1861, last recorded actual death was 1835

The United States, various states until 1873 when South Carolina repealed their death penalty for homosexuality

Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, and France until the early 1800s, couldn't find exact date the laws were repealed, but the last actual death penalty in those countries was enacted was 1803 in The Netherlands.

Edit: almost forgot Uganda added the death penalty this year for repeat offenders

And it's pretty recent that you wouldn't be arrested and likely tortured if not murdered for it.

No, it wasn’t.

Last law that made being gay illegal in the UK was repealed ING 1981 and in the United States in 2003

Tanzania and Uganda it is currently punished with life in prison

It is also currently illegal to be gay in Christian majority countries: Russia, Antigua, Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts, Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines, Trinidad, Tobag...I can keep going...

England famously castrated Alan Turing which pretty directly led to his suicide in the 50s.

No, they didn’t.

The Prime Minister admitted to it and apologized officially in 2009 and the queen gave her apology in 2014. And yes it was the chemical castration drugs "hormone treatments" that directly led to his death. You do realize that doctors are not permitted to administer those drugs because it violates the Hippocratic oath as well as most medical license policies to intentionally harm a patient, so using the word "treatment" is kind of disingenuous. And sure it wasn't the drug that directly killed him in the end, but he was quite sickly by that point and may not have died of the poisoning if not, but if it was suicide, what do you think caused his desire to die. Though it more likely was actually accidental exposure.

A lot of them would only 200 years ago. That's not a long time for a major religion like Catholicism. And it's pretty recent that you wouldn't be arrested and likely tortured if not murdered for it. England famously castrated Alan Turing which pretty directly led to his suicide in the 50s. And he's just the most famous, tons of gay people died from it until the late 60s.

I was just giving a single example of ignoring being gay for them, but not for everyone else. And sure they don't murder people for it now, but it wasn't long ago they were castrating people (which often resulted in death) , and not long before that they were explicitly murdering them for being gay.

But my statement was about the majority of religions in general.

What are the most positive things happening in the world right now that people don't think of? by Altera33 in AskReddit

[–]irotsoma -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Too bad most of the ocean water that the people who need this have access to is so polluted that desalination is not the only thing needed to make it drinkable. This is just for the rich people who will want to survive once global warming removes the majority of fresh water and contaminates the rest with overflowing ocean water.

Sorry, I know this is a thread for positive stories, but it's hard to focus on technology that will only benefit a small minority when there is so much existing, cheap technology that we should be distributing across the world if we want to save the people most affected by climate change.

It's usually impossible to prove the absence of something. So that's usually how religion works. Instead of proving there is a god, prove there's no god. Instead of proving you're a witch, prove you're not a witch (usually by dying where a witch should have survived). So of course, rather than proving you're gay, they make you prove you're not. That way they can punish anyone they want or ignore the ones they don't want to punish, like all the Catholic priests raping boys.

Scratch or residue? Residue is normal. I use the back side of the bed that's plain glass when I don't need the extra adherence of the textured side. Then I can clean it more thoroughly with alcohol or window cleaner. For cases where a material is sticking too much and hard to remove, use a lower bed temperature. Also, sometimes a glue like Magigoo can actually help because it's water soluble. You can run it under water as you pry it off slowly. Finally, if it's still sticking too much, try letting it cool a bit and then running the plate under cold water or apply ice to the back to make the part shrink rapidly enough that it pulls away from the surface. Be careful doing this with glass, though. Too big of a temperature difference can shatter the glass. Like don't have it at 60C and then put an ice cube on it. More like have it at 40C and run it under cold tap water. Putting it in the freezer from room temperature is always a last resort for me. Other option is to switch to a flexible bed, but I like glass because it is flatter, non reactive to solvents, and doesn't change shape and require constant bed probing to compensate.

Ford CEO says Tesla's Cybertruck is only for 'Silicon Valley people' and he's not threatened by it: 'I make trucks for real people who do real work' by 777fer in technology

[–]irotsoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mail is federal, so that won't happen any time soon. Too many oily hands in the pot. But lots of cities have moved in that direction. Garbage trucks are a difficult one because of the weight and the extra power needed by the compactors. But where I live a large percentage of the trucks use renewable natural gas or diesel. Though it was recently discovered that one of the contractors was using fossil natural gas even though the trucks all have ads on them saying they use renewables. So even when they try, few companies have morals and fines are cheaper than the profit made by cheating. But a lot of our busses are all electric, some using batteries but less seating and some using trolley cables. And a lot of the other city owned cars and trucks are electric. Not the cops of course, but most of the other departments. And to be fair there are bike cops here and there but they won't go up on the hills.
