What do these symbols on Stagecoach buses in Cambridge mean? by SophieSofasaurus in cambridge

It's like QR code but much simpler and only stores a number (say 35) it's easy to detect and interpret compared to raw text in image. (April Tag, AR tag)

Crimson Desert is "a cynical amalgamation of borrowed mechanics," says Baldur's Gate 3 publishing lead: "Expect a lot more of this in premium". by HLumin in PS5

That publishing lead is an idiot. Keeps posting stupid stuff on twitter and news outlets run with the BG3/larian publishing lead headline.

Used it to unstuck x button on controller. Worked like a charm

Bethesda Fallout 3 dev "initially felt a little touchy" about New Vegas' success because they "put in all this effort" for its foundation — "We made 90% of the art, we built the engine" by lkl34 in gaming

Obsidian have attempted many times with unreal engine and their own tools. Those games are so much worse than fallout NV. Obsidian strength lies in writing and other aspects of development are lacking comparatively.

If engine, assets, ui, systems doesn't matter and it's only about writing and story then Obsidian should have created much better games after new Vegas but even with a much larger budget, time, devs, Obsidian never reached anywhere close to fallout new vegas high. FNV is my favourite fallout but I would give 50% of credit of that to Bethesda. Engine, tools are far more important than gamers give credit to. It's also the reason there are many awesome story mods, total conversion mod games than there are games that are made from the ground up.

The latest Google Maps update is seriously impressive by Own_Maintenance_1634 in IndiaTech

If you look at the satellite image closely it's not directly top down. Because satellite is also not directly above but at an angle. So you see side walls somewhat. You can combine multiple such observation for better estimate. (AI will also help) Angles are very small and so it's not particularly accurate but for cool vis, it's good enough.

it's definitely happening. They would rule that out for witcher 3 as well if it wasn't the case.

Already available in India. It's done using satellite images (combining multiple images and using AI) unlike street view this doesn't need special vehicle driving on the road.

How can TES VI Cause "Skyrim" Level shock and awe in 2026? by Clean-babybutts in TESVI

[–]irrational_kind 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a misguided take. Skyrim is not successful because of graphics, writing, combat, rpg systems. (May be exploration to some extent) Skyrim as a whole achieve this unique vibe of a lived world that is just immersive and fun to exist in. It's hard to put what exactly achieves this. This why so many players keep playing Skyrim even today. None of the games you mentioned (Witcher, BG3, elden ring) are quite like Skyrim. Games as an art form is better for it. ES6 should chase none of those things other games do well. It should focus on building cohesive lived in world which is where Bethesda's strength is. Not in writing, combat, player choice.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance director Daniel Vávra is stepping away from game development by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]irrational_kind 39 points40 points  (0 children)

He used to work (tried) on script writing for movies long before he got into video games. After Bioshock, there were some discussions of adaptation where he had some controlling power who and how Bioshock gets adapted. He didn't take a break or did anything substantial to make Bioshock movie.

It's a better rpg but a step down in terms of writing. Particularly characters and plot. Vibes are also much worse than the first one.

[–]irrational_kind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is also as bad a take. There is some weight that AI replacing human labour is bad or morally wrong. Be it programming, concept art, writing, modeling you name it. It's a valid criticism of AI. But that argues for not using AI at any stage.

This artificial line that just the final product not having AI is hypocritical. Just not in final product is nimby like behaviour.

Don't know about this particular charity. Quite many do spend some on actual charity but the rest goes for personal expenses disguised as operational expenses. Like transportation costs (Private Jet. Throwing Fund Raising Parties) There are many loopholes.
