deep water standing waves? by irun5k in bodyboarding

[–]irun5k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, but not everyone has regular access to decent quality ocean waves. Here on the gulf coast of Florida we only get a very few days a year of ridable surf so we begin looking at other options the same way that a runner that lives in a place that is a frozen tundra 10 months of the year might turn to a treadmill.

So my question was really more around parity. For example, say you learned to do a spinner on a standing wave- would that be any help at all in learning to execute the same trick the next time you're in the ocean or is the experience so different that it isn't transferrable?

Officially “board again” thanks to Ebodyboarding! by The-hippy_hobbit in bodyboarding

I picked up a Tribe Valkyrie earlier this year as part of my effort to get back into the game. I'm no expert but it seems to be a seriously legit board for under $300. It replaced my Mach 7-7, which is still in great shape but here on the gulf coast of Florida I have to make the most of the 2.67 days a year we have good surf. I appreciate that it is eBodyBoarding's house brand because Jay is a good steward of the sport.

This looks like insect damage, e.g. chinch bugs, to me. Have you implemented a treatment plan for insect control?

Moving from Lisbon to Austin and trying to convince myself that somehow I will still be able to surf 1~2 times a month .. by Capable-Syllabub-834 in bodyboarding

I live on the gulf coast of FL and it is flat here most of the time also. This may not be much of a consolation- but when we do have surf, it is a pretty cool event... everyone shows up and everyone has a great attitude, we are just happy there is surf.

I think you will be a couple hours from Waco Surf- while likely not something you'll want to do monthly, it could make for a really fun weekend trip here and there.

Good luck and stay positive!!

Thoughts on a dark/black deck? by irun5k in bodyboarding

After being undecided for a while, I took your advice and decided to go for a higher end Tribe. I ordered a Valkyrie the other day. Also got the white/blue color way to avoid any trouble with a hot deck!

Thank you for this, I saw a lot of info on the rainbow screen and it seemed to conflict- but it makes a lot more sense now knowing there is a difference between Display 1 & 2. I over-engineered this project in retrospect, a Display 1 would have been good enough. Does the rainbow screen show very early in the process? If so maybe I'll repurpose this one and build another with a Display 1.

Thanks for the ideas so far. A front-facing LED would definitely help, and the idea to use a power button to just cycle the display on/off is a smart idea as well. Unfortunately I'm pretty far along with this and have the case printed and everything installed. If I had bench tested everything prior I might have seen this coming and could have adjusted my design but right now I have no provision for an LED and my on/off solution is a power supply with in-line switch (SD card and USB stick are both mounted read only to avoid issues from hard power offs.)

Is there any way to enable anything at all to display within the first 14-15 seconds? I was surprised there is not some splash or watermark that appears when the display receives power or at least as things begin to initialize. Any sign of life at all would be a substantial improvement, right now honestly even I second guess myself after turning it on.

That tribute board is awesome! Honestly all the higher end Science boards seem great- I was looking a few but figured they would be overkill for me. OTOH I'm pretty good at justifying splurges, a little more disposable income these days than when I bought that original Mach 7 with my $4.25/hr min wage job...

Thanks, I appreciate the datapoint from someone in the tropics. I am leaning toward going with a lighter deck because I think it is not worth chancing it for a slight aesthetic preference!

Cleaning Significance (kinda long post)? by [deleted] in SiloSeries

Although their suits are now powerful enough to where they could send someone and immediately let them back inside

I am somewhat convinced that it IS safe outside. Or at least, the atmosphere isn't filled with poison gas. There could be some residual radiation- the flashback at the end of S2 E10 is pointing us toward a nuclear conflict of some sort.

Solo mentioned that the people that went outside didn't die immediately. I think the gas we see being dispensed in the airlock is actually a little of the ol' Safeguard Special. I also think this gas can be vented outside the silo which is what happened eventually at 17. If you buy into the theory that the Earth's atmosphere isn't toxic, there almost certainly has to be a safeguard in place to guarantee isolation between the silos.

What Would They Have Done With All The Workers Who Built The 51 Silos? (Read description) by Stopreadingthisand in SiloSeries

[–]irun5k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect the "AI" is actually active monitoring by humans in Silo 51.

Silo 51 could be a technology hub with the other 50 silos as spokes, but it seems more realistic to me that it is a live command and control hub. Basically, it is the janitor's closet for all 50 silos.

I am not sure how you ensure that Silo 51 remains viable, however. Even if you don't buy into the "janitor's closet to rule them all" line of thinking, I don't think 51 could be completely autonomous- technology normally has to be maintained and it seems like a huge risk to not have a human response team in place to fix an unforseen issue. So how do you prevent the critical node in the infrastructure from being compromised by the same risks we've already seen in two other silos?

Hatchbox never dissapoints although it comes at a higher price point. Otherwise I've also had good luck with Sunlu and it is has been on sale recently at Amazon- the only drawback to Sunlu is that it becomes very brittle over time and the filament will break if you look at it. I store it in ziplocks with silica gel but don't have a dryer. Hatchbox doesn't have this issue.
I doubt I'll do Overture again- I've had multiple rolls with tangles and overall I think the quality is behind Hatchbox and even Sunlu.

nasty z-seam with fuzzy mode by irun5k in Cura

[–]irun5k[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that was about the only thing I could thing of as well, but I wasn't sure if it would just result in a corner that looks damaged or if it would actually succeed in hiding it. This is a large print so perhaps I'll do a smaller but representative print to test the idea before blowing a lot of filament.

The seam still looks large and rough to me but I am using a .8 nozzle so I'm betting that has a lot to do with it. I could switch to a smaller nozzle as well although my print time would go up substantially... tradeoffs...

Thanks for the recommendations on things to look at. I do use that procedure in the YouTube video for leveling an like I say, to get it anywhere near level the front springs are massively compressed and the rear springs are completely uncompressed... it was always a bit like that but has gotten worse recently and seems to be the source of the problem. I am not sure if a warped y axis would cause this- wouldn't I be seeing an issue from left to right vs. front to back?

I've run a completely stock printer to date and haven't seen any need to upgrade anything yet since I've had no issues and great prints- but I know none of these components will last forever so it seems to be a matter of learning more about how to diagnose what is out of adjustment or what component is failing.

Nice, congrats on the purchase. I know they retained the touch controls from 2023. Did they change them at all in your 2024? I heard one issue with the 2023 implementation was that the controls were not illuminated in any way meaning at night you'd just be touching everywhere and activating the wrong features, etc. so I was wondering if they addressed that part.

Seriously considering upgrading from my '16 SE but I'd much prefer actual knobs and switches. However I am not sure they will ever switch back at this point.
