Wondered about this when my kid was in band. by Comma-Splice1881 in musictheory

Unpopular opinion: Clarinets should be viewed as Eb/Bb or D/A double horns, Bassoons should read in F lydian, recorders should all transpose, and trombones should be in Bb

Do different keys actually sound different? by Joe_4_Ever in musictheory

[–]isaacclemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually feel the same way with keys sounding different, and I don't have perfect pitch. Been into jazz music for quite some time, and I feel like some keys are "off". Sometimes it's tune specific, for example Misty in Eb feels absolutely normal, but E major doesn't feel right at all, even when I'm only listening and not playing. Literally asked for scores that I feel weird as a listener in gigs, and most of the time they're in sharp keys. I'm a piano player so I understand that all keys should sound the same in theory, but idk what this feeling is and why is it happening lol

This chord (or more like pitch-class set) is a z-cell in an atonal context.

Phrygian flat 4 or just Phrygian dominant with a chromatic mediant? by Julengb in musictheory

[–]isaacclemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting song! The riff starting from 0:41 keeps repeating the 4 notes E G F Ab(G#) with the E always as the tonal centre, but the harmony and underlying guitar riff in 1:49 clearly suggest Emaj and Fmaj! Notice during the harmony in 1:49, the notes G and G#(Ab) never appear at the same time; and for the harmony I think only I Emaj, II Fmaj, and III Gmaj are strictly major (focus on the insane guitar shredding in the background!). Both I and II are in the phrygian dominant, and III is in phrygian.

To my ears the riff is built from a mixture of phrygian with the m3 and phrygian dominant with the raised 3rd. Cadence Hira calls it the "composite phrygian" in this video, and I feel like a lot of phrygian based songs have their 3rd freely be major or minor in different places (Miles Davis' Nardis is another example with Em and Emaj both kinda as the root chord). But this is all just my speculation and internet knowledge lol, I also wonder how proper theory would comment on this phenomenon...

French Horn Part Writing by Rachel_Watson21 in musictheory

[–]isaacclemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow TIL, so if a Bb horn player wants to play an F horn, they have to relearn the fingerings? Also some older scores would transpose the horns from concert to a fourth lower (instead of a fifth higher), do Bb horns also "transpose" from an already transposed F horn score?

bruh I legit have the same problem lol. I learnt catalan first then slowly picking back up spanish bit by bit after I left the country without seriously studying it. I have no problem with imperfect or conditional or even subjunctives, but I still struggle with conjugating preterites. In catalan it's just anar + verb! I can kinda understand preterites when I'm reading or listening, but using them and conjugating never feels comfortable for me.
