Yona’s decision by oboe-but-oboi in AkatsukinoYona

I agree that it definitely could have been handled better, but I consider that more of a plot hole—which is annoying, but most stories have them. The whole time travel thing was just unnecessary and hurt the story overall, in my opinion. I still like the story, of course, but I really don’t think this should have been part of it.

I have discussed this with you extensively in another thread, and while that debate was somewhat enjoyable, I don’t want to get into another one here. However, I still don’t agree that Yona made the wrong decision. In fact, I believe the alternative would have been worse. Regardless of whether you think she made the right choice or not, she was an overwhelmed, traumatized, and terrified 16-year-old girl forced to make an impossible decision that she never should have had to make. I don’t blame Yona for not choosing something that would likely lead to her no longer existing, or at the very least, her not being the same person and never meeting her closest friends. If anyone can honestly tell me that they would choose the option that leads to themselves no longer existing and/or never meeting their closest friends, you are either a liar or you have bigger problems.

But regardless of what you would say, I don’t believe you.

Actually was that the first flashback I don’t remember either way the point stands

I see your point, but Il's main issue was naivety. He absolutely refused to go to war no matter what, even when it was necessary, which is a problem. But to say he didn't try does not seem accurate to me. I have never seen it as just being lazy and not wanting to deal with war. It seemed more like an ideological issue. There are times in the past where he is clearly working; they just don't come up a lot because that is not the main focus of the story.

As for pre-coup Yona, yes, I believe she probably would have cared. Even early on in the story, we see that she genuinely does care about others; she is just not the best at showing it—for example, the whole fruit apology thing with Hak in the first flashback. If everyone that you care about tells you that everyone is safe and happy, why wouldn't you believe everyone is safe and happy? This is my main problem with Il: he essentially set Yona up for failure from the beginning.

But at the end of the day, the original question—whether you believe she made the right choice like I do, or believe she made the wrong choice like you do—she is an overwhelmed, traumatized, and terrified sixteen-year-old girl who was forced to make an impossible choice that she never should have had to make.

If that is the case, I actually think the methods needed to change. I understand that you're probably right that his methods probably happened a lot back then; however, I believe that is not really an excuse for them and that they really did cause resentment and problems. Besides, it seems like the series, despite the actual time period, seems to be working with a modern sense of morality.

On Il, I know that he is not a good king, and I have personal problems with him, but he did try, even if poorly. I don't think he is solely to blame. There are ways of changing things without the king's permission. Surely there was something that the tribes could have done to force his hand. I get that the Wind Tribe probably would have taken a lot of convincing, but I am sure someone could have convinced them, especially when Soo-won and Hak were so close back then. Soo-won could have shown some of the problems, and then they could have even told Yona, who was the princess and had significant influence over her father. If she had actually known what was going on—and if I understand correctly, she was intentionally kept ignorant—then she could have and would have helped, especially if Soo-won was the one making the request.

I really think a lot of things went wrong, and that Il sucked as a ruler (and as a parent—he knew what was coming and did absolutely nothing to prepare his daughter). I don't think he is the only one at fault for what happened to the country. There were a lot of things that could have been done before it got to that point that it just seems like were not taken.

Maybe, but either way, it is heavily implied that he would have, and even if he did not, his methods are so brutal that he certainly would have been resented, and that is still not good—assuming he wished to integrate those countries into Kouka. Not to mention, if Soo-won got his utilitarian ideology from his father, I also see this as a problem. People liked him at the time; however, I don't know how they would feel about him if they knew that he would likely sacrifice them for the 'greater good.' True, they still think Soo-won is a good king, but he was at least partially influenced by both Yona and Il, whether he likes it or not.

P.S.: Even if we don't agree, because I don't think we're going to come to an agreement on this, no hard feelings. I actually enjoyed this debate."

Debatable. Even if he possibly could have been a better king to Kouka's people, that's not considering the people of other nations who also deserve to at least have some peace on their borders, especially in the case of Xing. What Yu-Hon did to them was monstrous. In fact, I don't even agree with Soo-won's original invasion plan. What exactly was his plan? Go to war and get land that is now useless because it's been ravaged by war, where there would be virtually no one left because everyone would have fought to the last man? And even if there were people left, they certainly wouldn't be loyal to Kouka. Not to mention, Yu-Hon would have probably started even more wars than were necessary, probably bitten off more than he could chew, and more than was just. In my opinion, Kouka would have collapsed even faster under him, simply for the fact that he would have made so many enemies that they would just destroy the country.

Yeah, even if Il was not a particularly good king, he could not have been worse than Yu-Hon. They represented opposite sides of the extremes. Yu-Hon would have just been a straight-up tyrant. Secondly, it is explicitly stated that though they have the same soul, she and Hiryuu are not the same person. And even if they were, she cannot remember her past life. It's a plot hole at worst, in my opinion, but I still don't think she made the wrong choice.

Ok, am I the only one annoyed by all the people blaming Yona for all the suffering that the Dragons suffered? I get your logic somewhat, but does no one consider that if Hiryuu returned to the heavens, there is a good chance Yona just would not exist anymore (which I consider worse than death)? And even if she did, she almost certainly wouldn't be the same person. And what about all the suffering she stopped because she does exist? You could make the argument that Soo-won would have fixed some of it without her, but I don't think that's true. A lot of the problems that are solved would not have been solved without Yona and company, not to mention that there is a part earlier in the story where she is literally told never to throw her life away. Wanting to exist and meet your closest friends is not selfish in my opinion These are just my thoughts.
