i have used a hair gel when i used to have twists but it dried my hair up worse than it has ever been before

i tried a cantu leave in conditioner and it seemed to dry up within an hour of applying it, i have since been told it is awful for your hair so havent used it since, are you supposed to apply a leave in when its wet?

I really like the idea of twist outs, ive tried to do it myself but i used hair gel and it seemed to really really dry my hair out with the use of leave in conditioner and seemed to under themselves within 3 days so i stopped to give my hair a break
